Kathy and Katie,
My husband , Steve, and I are overwhelmed with sadness at the loss of Dick. Our hearts go out to you both.
I would like to tell you something of my experiences with Dick in the hopes that I can convey how generous he was with the people he worked with. Perhaps these memories can add to the good memories you have and help somehow. I know it will help me to write about Dick in the guest book
I have know Dick as his client for almost 30yrs. His sense of humor was such fun. It was such a pleasure to see him. He was more to me, of course, than a decorator. I liked him and cared about him.
I had lost track of him for a few years and got reconnected last summer. We were not friends as such, yet I cared very much that he seemed settled in a good way with you, Kathy, and was so proud of Katie. Katie, he spoke of you with pride of protectiveness. When I had the chance, I always asked how you were doing as I liked to see this happiness in him when he spoke of you.
Many of my friends were clients, as well. We wanted to share him because we valued his advice and came to rely on his practicality and good judgement. Early on, as young couples, he helped furnish our homes. He was not a hit with everyone, of course, and we still collapse in hysteria at the looks on the faces of the couple who got a cardboard model of a wave ceiling for their kitchen.
Recently, as we are "downsizing" we loved to have him over for a consult, and he just had the knack for getting things right. (the first time) With his permission I "gifted" a morning with Dick at a birthday party. The card read "Start your day with Dick Skjod.... " and it (he) was received with laughs and anticipation.
My new husband came to know Dick and value his advice over the last 6 months as he helped Steve plan out the remodeling of a home he owns, the one he lived in before we married a few years ago. Steve was so resistant to seeing a "decorator", thinking this was so Edina of me. I persisted, telling him, "But it's Dick!"
Well, after their first meeting it was like Dick was Steve's new best friend . They met at Steve's old house which Steve had been renting to young men, my son being one of them. Dick took one look and said, "Wait.... I forgot the dynamite in my trunk."
Dick mapped out a plan for the reno and has helped Steve get a handle on the project. They met at Home Depot. They met at Menards. My advice was subject to approval by a higher power. "I'll ask Dick", he would say. "No, Dick thinks it should be this way"
I will miss him tremendously. I have had this person in my life in a professional, yet personal , way for so many years. I am sitting at the desk he designed, in the room with the wallpaper he picked out, my kitchen has his chandelier and chairs, the family room his sofa, "ball"chairs, carpet and lamps. When my kids were born he helped with their rooms.
Now they are grown and gone, and he has given me good advice on reclaiming the rooms, with an eye towards getting this house ready for resale.
He told me where to get a kit for some kind of wall faux-something and he picked out the colors. I learned my kitchen was "tired" and sink fixtures can be "kitchen jewelry".
We sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Kathy--Dick will truly be missed. I loved to see him feed the birds. He was certainly helpful to me when I moved in 3 years ago. He always had time to stop and talk. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your daughter.
Blessings--Linda Carole
