He proudly served in the United States Air Force, born during the Great Depression in Appalachia and rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He served during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. A lover of the outdoors, he found joy in gardening, fishing, and hunting, and founded the Sportsman Club at the Air Force Academy. In his later years, he was a steady volunteer with the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans organizations. He worked Bingo at the DAV for more than 20 years and was beloved by his fellow servicemen. His life was marked by tremendous grit and resilience. Matt is remembered with grace and a recognition of all that shaped him.
