Dr. Dipendra Chandra Sengupta

Dr. Dipendra Chandra Sengupta, 70, of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 15, 2025.
Born on October 23, 1955, in Bankura, India, Dr. Sengupta made Virginia Beach his home for the past 23 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from SUNY Stony Brook, laying the foundation for a distinguished and lifelong career as both a scholar and an educator.
Dr. Sengupta served as a Professor of Mathematics at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), retiring in 2024 after an extraordinary 40-year career. He was an accomplished and passionate teacher, deeply beloved by his students and colleagues, and a brilliant researcher whose work left a lasting impact. His excellence in education was recognized with the UNC Board of Governors' Excellence in Teaching Award, an honor that reflected both his dedication and his profound influence in the classroom.
Beyond academia, Dr. Sengupta was a devoted member of the Hampton Roads Bengali community and the Sangeet Sargam organization. He was cherished for his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he especially loved cricket and tennis, forming many lasting friendships through these passions. He was a founder of the Tidewater Cricket Club and a proud recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his efforts to share his love of the sport and build community through it.
He will be remembered for his sharp wit, kind soul, and the way he consistently put others before himself. Dr. Sengupta had a unique gift for bringing people together, and his presence filled every space with warmth, connection, and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jharna Dana Sengupta, and his two cherished daughters, Swarnali Sengupta and Sohini Sengupta, as well as a large and devoted extended family who adored him deeply.
He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.
