Dolly A. Uthe
December 28, 1933 - February 18, 2025
Dolly Uthe, 91, of Madison passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion, SD. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, at the United Methodist Church in Madison. Burial took place at Rosehill Cemetery in Wentworth.
Dolly Ann Leighton was born on December 28, 1933, in Madison, SD, to Orlando and Bernice (Peterson) Leighton. Dolly held the record for the smallest baby born, weighing less than four pounds, at the Madison Hospital for many years. She graduated from Rutland High School in 1951.
Dolly married William (Bill) J. Uthe on May 26, 1954. They were blessed with two children, Keith and Craig. Bill and Dolly made their home on the family farm near Franklin, SD. After their retirement, they moved to Madison in 1990.
Dolly provided a loving home for Bill and their children. She loved her family, especially all her grandchildren. In her younger years, she loved going for walks, playing dominos and teaching her grandchildren her love of stitchery. Dolly made many works of art, including crocheted doilies and hardanger stitchery, which is a Norwegian embroidery. She was famous for her fudge and peanut brittle that she made during the holidays. Many of us have tried to duplicate both and have failed. Dolly also worked at Bethel Lutheran Home for eight years before she and Bill retired from the farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Madison.
Survivors include her two sons, Craig (Theresa) Uthe of Sioux Falls and Keith (Donna) Uthe of Madison; five grandchildren, Jason Uthe, Amanda Massey, Beth Wohnoutka, Kendra O'Brien and Ryley Uthe; ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lavetta Foster of Brookings, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 2011; two brothers, Larry and Don Leighton; four sisters, Maurine Stonefield, Jean Ingemansen, Beverly Leighton, and Ruth Erickson.
The family is grateful for the care and kindness provided to Dolly, including meals on Wheels and Home Health services over the years. We are thankful for the excellent care she received at Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion, SD, the short time she was there.
