Domenic Savino Obituary

Domenic J. Savino, 100, of Bristol passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, surrounded by his family at the Rhode Island Veterans Home. He was the husband of the late Catherine "Kitty" (Palumbo).

A lifelong Bristolian, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lucy (Capone) Savino.

In 1944 Domenic entered the United States Navy Armed Guard. He served aboard two Liberty ships as a forward gunner during World War II. His ships made six slow and dangerous Atlantic crossings and 12 vital and perilous trips to the beaches of France on D-Day and in the ensuing months. He brought troops and equipment to Utah and Omaha Beaches and Cherbourg, France while under constant enemy attack from land, sea, and air. He was also on the convoy known as the "Red Ball Express" which supplied General Patton. He received the European and American Campaign medals with valor, the WW ll Victory Medal and combat action ribbon.

After the war, Domenic returned to Bristol to marry Emily (Principe). Together they had two devoted daughters Kathleen and Donna whom he would forever be proud to introduce. After Emily passed in 1970, he later married "Kitty". They enjoyed 48 wonderful and fulfilling years together before her passing. Domenic was employed by Bristol Manufacturing, Converse Rubber, PF Industries, and Miner Industries as the factory changed over the years. He was a respected production supervisor, designer, and maintenance engineer. He was part of the team that designed and manufactured basketball sneakers for Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.

In 2010, Domenic was issued the Navy Armed Guard Award by the State of Rhode Island. In 2021, he was accompanied by his grandson Domenic, on an "Honor Flight RI" for WW II veterans to the nation's service memorials. He continued to lead an active social life at the RI Veterans Home until his passing.

Domenic was a talented artist and fine craftsman. He enjoyed metalwork, wood carving and boat building. His family was his biggest love. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle. His caring, wisdom, and general good nature will be greatly missed by all.

Domenic is survived by his daughters: Kathleen DuPont and Donna Murgo (Nicholas); his grandchildren: Domenic Murgo and Gabriel Murgo (Stephanie); his great grandchildren: Zachary and Zoey Murgo; nephews, nieces, and extended family. He also leaves his loyal friends and caring staff at the Rhode Island Veterans Home.

My condolences to the family..

July 31, 2025

Dear Kathy and Donna: I am so sorry for your dad´s passing. He was a great man, loved you dearly and I know how much you loved him.
He was a special guy. I remember growing up down the street and hanging out, frequently, at your home, hanging out in the kitchen, in the yard, listening to Beatles or picking you up to walk to school together. Your dad was always kind, helpful and had a kind word and smiling face. I remember that he was very talented, loved working on his boat and teaching you many of his talents.

You meant the world to him as was evidenced by the time he spent helping and teaching you and being there whenever you needed him.

I hope, over time, all of the time you spent together and your memories put a smile on your face. Love, Annie
