Don E. Maxwell, age 68 of Coleridge, Nebraska died on Friday, September 12, 2025 at his residence.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, September 18, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Kevin Vogle and Rev. Will Targy officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael’s cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be on Wednesday, at church, from 5-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday morning one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Pallbearers will be Justin Eriksen, Austin Roach, Riley Lund, Buck Rasmussen, Nick Andrew, Nick Uhing, Mitchell Miller, and Christian Andrew. Honorary pallbearers will be his former wrestlers, stat keepers and coaches. Honorary pallbearers will form an honor guard at the cemetery.
Donald Eugene was born on July 24, 1957 in Oakland, Nebraska to Vaden Leroy and Ardith Allene (Begley) Maxwell. He grew up in the Tekamah and Craig area and graduated from Tekamah-Herman High School in 1975. Don then attended Northeast Tech in Norfolk studying Architectural Drafting. Don married Bernice Bonnie Hoesing on June 7, 1980 in Hartington. After graduating, he worked for Sharlow Homes in Tekamah and Hastings. Don farmed with his parents for a while and then received his Teachers Degree from Wayne State College and also received a degree in special education. Don began coaching wrestling and driving a bus at Tekamah until 2008. Don then taught and coached wrestling, football at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge H.S. Don and Bernice then moved to Schuyler where he taught and coached from 2019-2024. Don coached the junior high wrestling program there and also taught a high need special education class. Don retired in May of 2024.
Don was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Coleridge, loved wrestling, camping and being outdoors. He coached his kids in the summer softball and baseball programs at Tekamah. He and his son Ty started the baseball program back up again in Laurel & Coleridge.
Don is survived by his wife Bernice of Coleridge; three children and spouses Amanda (Ron) Miller of Hillsdale, WY, Alexis (Greg) Kvols of Laurel, Tyler (Kelly) Maxwell of Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren – Cherrish, Augustus (Skylar), Mitchell; Karli, Kloie, Beth, Jake, & Grant; Beau, Tatum, & Drew; three great grandchildren – Montana, Nova, and Barrett; his mother Ardith Maxwell of Fremont, two siblings Ray (Linda) Maxwell of West Point, Rita (Gary) Glandon of Craig; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Vaden; parents-in-law Hilary (Bonnie) Hoesing; in-law siblings Dave Hoesing and Ann Rooney; in-law nephew Patrick Hoesing.
