Don Steveley Obituary

Mr. Don Reed Steveley, age 90, of Madison, Indiana entered this life on April 11, 1933 in Buckland, Ohio. He was the loving son of the late William E. and Una Reed Steveley. He was raised and graduated high school in Buckland, Ohio. He earned a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Ohio Northern University in 1959. He was inducted into the United States Navy on November 5, 1952 in Lima, Ohio and rose to the rate of Machinist Mate Third Class serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on July 21, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania receiving the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He married Jenelle Irene Stoner on September 14, 1954 in Spencerville, Ohio and was blessed with a son, Thomas Reed. They enjoyed thirty-five years of marriage together before her death on January 16, 1989. He worked as a mechanical engineer for eighteen years at Cooper Bessemer in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He moved to Madison, Indiana in 1977 and bought Ace Hardware and worked there until he retired in 2001. He married Mary M. Goebel Greene on March 17, 1990 in Madison and they enjoyed seventeen years together before her death on March 1, 2007. He married Mary Margaret Glass McVay on October 31, 2009 in Madison and they shared 13 years of marriage together until her death on November 24, 2022. Don enjoyed Cincinnati Reds baseball and IU basketball. He loved spending time with his family. Don attended Prince of Peace Catholic Church in downtown Madison. Don died on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at 11:34 a.m. at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana. Don will be missed by his son, Thomas Steveley and his wife, Diane of Madison, Indiana; his grandson, Connor Reed Steveley; his step grandson, Devon Effinger; his brother, Robert S. Steveley of Idaho; his step children, Barbara Greene of Madison, Indiana, Patti Wallace and her husband John of Madison, Indiana, Jackie Thurston and her husband Dan of Madison, Indiana, J. B. Greene and his wife Lisa of Fort Myers, Florida, Gina McVay Stone and her husband, Bobby of Hanover, Erika McVay Coleman and her husband, C.J. of Madison, Indiana; his step-grandchildren, Kristopher (Anna), Kurtis (Kate), Kelsi, Trey (Pam), Ryan (Addison), Trisha, Shelby Greene, Michael, Ondraya, Alyssa, Justice "J.J.", Bryce, and Pyper; his step great grandchildren, Jack, Ella, Ada, Cole, and Daliela; his sister in law, Trudy Conway of Lexington, Kentucky; his brother in law, Joseph E. Glass of St. Louis, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Steveley, died March 5, 1980, his mother, Una Reed Steveley, died July 3, 1988, his first wife, Jenelle Irene Stoner Steveley, died on January 16, 1989, his second wife, Mary Greene Steveley, died March 1, 2007, his third wife, Mary Margaret Glass McVay Steveley, died November 24, 2022, and his sisters, Willa June Carmean, December 17, 2008 and Donna Jean Ogborn, died February 25, 2020, and his sister in law, Betty Steveley, died November 22, 2018. Private family services will be conducted at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, Indiana. Military honors will be provided by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Friends of Shawe and Pope John. Cards are available at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centres of Madison and Hanover. Don and I graduated together with BSME Degrees from Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio in 1959. I remember Don as always being a very kind, friendly, honest individual with an outstanding pleasant personality... an excellent person and friend,
