Donald Bruce Bandow, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. He was born on August 3, 1955, in Conrad, Montana, to Richard and Elgene Bandow. Don was raised in Conrad, where he made many lifelong friends and graduated from Conrad High School in 1973.
Don's life centered around two things he loved deeply: agriculture and family. In his early twenties, he developed a love for truck driving, hauling hogs to Seattle twice a week for eight years. He enjoyed seeing the country and meeting people along the way. Being behind the wheel of his Freightliner brought him joy — right up until the day he passed.
In 1983, Don married Wanda Turk, and together they shared nearly 42 wonderful years. They were blessed with two children, Brent and Kara. When his children were young, Don stepped back from long-haul trucking and began working alongside his father and grandfather operating Bandow Farm Company. He was a devoted father who never missed a game or school event — his children were the center of his world.
Don was a true people person. Whether it was a close friend or a new acquaintance, he loved to stop and chat. His warm nature, easy conversation, and big heart left lasting impressions on everyone he met.
He had a special compassion for animals and was affectionately known by his family as a “softie.” Since childhood, he always had a beagle by his side, and every animal — whether cow, dog, or cat — was part of the family. Many of the cattle on his ranch had names, and saying goodbye to them each fall was never easy for him.
Don was also extraordinarily generous. He would drop everything to help a friend — or even a stranger — without hesitation. His kindness and willingness to lend a hand touched many lives in the community.
Though Don never officially retired, in recent years his greatest joy was his three grandsons. As “Gramps,” he beamed with pride any time he spoke of them. The special bond they shared brought immense happiness to his life, and his grandsons dearly loved their Gramps.
Don is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda; son Brent (Kelsey) Bandow; daughter Kara (Matt) Baker; and grandchildren Spencer Baker, Colson Bandow, and Caylor Bandow. He is also survived by his sister, Cathy (Jim) Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Elgene.
Don’s outgoing nature, generous spirit, and deep love for his family and community will be profoundly missed.
Memorial service will be Thursday, June 12, at 11:00 am at Pondera Valley Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pondera Valley Lutheran Church or charity of donor's choice.
