Donald L. "Don" Barfell, 82, of Elkhart, died at Elkhart Meadows on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024.
He was born July 19, 1942, in Elkhart to the late Paul W. and Margaret L. (Replogle) Barfell.
On Dec. 4, 1971, Don married the former Susan Smith in South Bend, Indiana. Susan died on Jan. 14, 2008. Surviving are their three sons: Blair Barfell (Cari Cosby) of Elkhart, Justin (Kristy) Barfell of Bristol and Jason (Nicole) Barfell of Elkhart; two grandchildren: Austin and Avery Barfell; three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Larry (Jean) Barfell of Elkhart.
Don graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and began his career teaching industrial arts at North Side Junior High School. He then worked in sales for a time at the family business, Elkhart Machine and Tool. In 1987, Don purchased Sunthimer's Hardware and operated it until 1993 when he sold the business to Central Hardware. He then took a position in sales with Square Deal Tool and Die. He ultimately finished his work career with Lowe's, where he worked for 16 years.
He enjoyed reading the Bible, cycling and kayaking, and he was also a concert pianist.
Visitation for Don will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, from 2-5 p.m. at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home where services will begin at 5 p.m. The Rev. Bryant Heist of Granger Community Church-Elkhart Campus will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Resources of Elkhart County, 23971 U.S. 33, Elkhart, IN 46517.
