Donald R. Barner

Donald R. Barner, age 75, a dedicated public servant, cherished husband, and proud veteran, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2025. He was born on November 2, 1950, in East Cleveland, to the late Albert and Dorothy (née Cummings) Barner. Don devoted his life to serving his community and his country. He proudly served as a U.S. Marine during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable military service, he became an Eastlake Police Officer for 16 years and later dedicated 25 years as a Lake County Prosecutor. Even in retirement, Don continued to serve by preparing tax returns for H&R Block for 10 years. He was a proud parishioner of St. John Vianney Church since 2016. He was a man of diverse and engaging passions. Don enjoyed the unique talent of playing the bagpipes, and found pleasure in golfing, bicycling, and woodworking. He loved traveling internationally and within the U.S. with his wife, creating countless memories. Don is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Thomasine (née Kavlick) Barner, and her son Nathan (Sara) Zavorek. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan, Jacoby, and Leah. He is also survived by his siblings Albert Barner III (Margaret), Michael Barner, and Dory (Joe) Granchi, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 9:30AM at St. John Vianney Church, 7575 Bellflower Rd, Mentor, OH 44060. Luncheon will follow the funeral mass at Fr. Kline Social Center. Don will be laid to rest at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio, at a later date.
