Donald Berta Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Hickey Chapel on Dec. 9, 2025.
Donald A. Berta, a man who lived a life of devotion to God, family, and community, peacefully passed away at his home on December 5, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Donald was born on January 31, 1933, in South Bend, IN to the late Julius M.and Anna F. ( Madar) Berta. He married Kaye E. Gard, the love of his life, on September 20,1958. They were blessed with more than 67 years of love and friendship before Don lost his soulmate on May 7, 2025.

Shortly after graduating from Burbank High School in Burbank, California, Don joined the United States Army where he served his country with honor for two years. Upon returning to South Bend, Don followed in his father's footsteps and began his career in the construction industry. He found his niche at Gibson and Lewis Construction and, after 28 years, retired as Vice president of the company. Don left a lasting legacy rooted in integrity, hard work, and mentorship.

Don was a faithful and active member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge where he and Kaye and their lifelong group of friends enjoyed dinner and dancing to the Jack Norris Band. Don was an enthusiastic fan of Notre Dame sports, where he shared countless good times tailgating with family and friends. He was also a member of the DAV. Don will be fondly remembered for the time he spent volunteering with his brother, Elmer, delivering Meals on Wheels, as well as for his service as a Red Coat at Memorial Hospital.

Together, Don and Kaye were admired for a marriage full of faith, love, mutual respect, and genuine joy. They made countless memories traveling the country, spending time at their lake cottage, and simply enjoying being together. Their relationship was a true example of what it looks like to love well and live life side by side.

" They say nothing lasts forever, but heavens never seen you together" -cjm

Don is deeply missed by his daughter; Lisa (Mitchell) Milliner, Osceola, IN, Son; Michael Berta, Granger, IN, six grandchildren; Christopher Milliner, Allison (Brett) Rayner, Carly (Charles) Oakley, Tori Milliner, Madelynn Berta, Adam Berta and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Gabriella Berta.

He was preceded by his parents, wife and brother Elmer Berta.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday December 15, 2025, at Palmer Funeral Homes, Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635 with visitation beginning at 11:30 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joe Valley Memorial Park.
