Donald Carlson Obituary
Donald Eugene "Don" Carlson, 84, of Lakewood, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025. Known as Don, Don E, Donny Baby, Dad, Pop, or Grandpa Bong Bong, he danced his way from this adventure filled life to his next journey that will most certainly be full of fun-fun-fun.
Born in Chicago, Illinois to George and Mildred Carlson, he was the third child of four - Chuck, Jerry, Don, and Mary Ann. Growing up "Southside" was always an important part of who he was and the beginning of many of his stories. He joyfully played basketball at the neighborhood churches or stickball in the streets. He had very tender memories of his maternal Grandparents Arthur (Art) and Irene Neuhaus who lived in Koontz Lake (Walkerton), Indiana.
He is survived by his eternal companion, Jenean, who first went out with him 35 years ago despite his incredibly tacky pick-up line of, "Do you want to go to the disco and fall in love?" Devoted father to Bruce (Molly), Kirsten (Rich), and Matthew (Grace) and proud grandfather to Christopher, Nels, Gretchen, Anna, and Hayes. Don is also survived by his cherished baby sister Mary Ann, and many nieces and nephews whom he embraced and loved deeply.
A graduate of Wooster High School (1959), Don served in the U.S. Air Force at Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, Ohio. He earned an accounting degree from Kent State University and began his career at Arthur Young as a CPA before becoming a partner at Higbee Travel, where he shared his passion for exploring the world where he enjoyed sharing and most his "secret" map to all the best hidden places on St. John, USVI. He retired as the Chief Financial Officer of Vocational Guidance Services, whose missions are to help individuals with disabilities achieve independence.
Don found his spiritual home when he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints later in life, a decision that sparked extensive meaningful experiences and relationships. His faith became a cornerstone of his life, leading him to serve faithfully in numerous callings within the church which touched countless lives with his kindness and unwavering example.
The life-long Ohio State fan will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, joy of sports, and deep love for family and friends. Don became very active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the "Silver Beaver" award, the highest recognition a local Scout council can present to a volunteer leader for distinguished service to youth, impacting lives through service at the council level.
Don lived life to its fullest during all the phases of Don that evolved in his life. No matter which of those phases you may have enjoyed together, you certainly have a Don story or two to tell!
We'll always imagine hearing him say "Marf" (I love you) just one more time.
