Donald Coomer Obituary

Don, beloved husband, father, grandfather "PaPa" and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Don was at his home surrounded by family, church members, and caregivers who all sang him home while the high tide of the Vernon River glistened in the background. Born on September 12, 1945, in Austin, Indiana, Don grew up around the Cincinnati area of Ohio, and eventually settled in Savannah, Georgia, where he fell in love with the love of his life Susan. Don is pre-deceased by his parents Martha Coomer Dick, Mitchell Coomer, and his brother "Joe" Coomer. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years Susan Ellis Coomer, his sons Stephen (Megan) and Richard (Stephanie), his grandchildren Maddie (Ty), Caroline, Everette (Meghan), Molly, his great-grand-son Brooks, along with his sister, Jackie Noyes.

Don served his country in the US Army, and after discharge began working in Data Processing. Don furthered his career by attending Armstrong State College where he earned a BBA in accounting. Together Don and Susan started an accounting practice in 1976. Don continued his studies receiving his CPA certificate in 1984. Don worked in accounting throughout the low country serving the small business community. Don's sense humor and dedication to finishing the job well made his chosen career a positive and lasting impact in the life of the company and its clients. Don was also involved with the Georgia Society of CPAs, and the American Institute of CPAs. Additionally, Don was a lifetime member of American Legion, Post 135. Beyond his professional endeavors, Don had a zest for life and a diverse range of interests, from corvettes to motorcycles, singing in the choir to working with the Coastal Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Don was a faithful man and served his church well, serving as a Deacon and an Elder. Don loved well and was well loved.

Special thanks to his caregivers Rhonda Smith, Yolanda Bailey, Mary Wright and the staff at Amber Grove.

My most sincere condolences to Susan and family. Don was a great guy and I was blessed to have known him. He knew what to do in so many different situations. One time a friend of mine had all of his accounts frozen by the " you know Who" and I told him to call Don and he brought peace to a bewildering experience.
He always made me feel welcomed.
Farewell and Godspeed Good Sir.
