Donald David Kangas, born on November 16, 1953, in Portland, Oregon, passed away on July 24, 2024, in Salem, Oregon, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Don was a quiet but insightful individual. He was a voracious reader on many topics and frequently responded with a well-articulated statement to a question or comment off handedly made by someone on any number of subjects.
Don became a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor on December 1, 1995. He was a double winner, having found 37 years of sobriety and serenity. Throughout his long career as an addiction counselor, Don shared his experience, strength, and hope with countless individuals, offering sage advice, wit, and wisdom. The full extent of his impact will never be known, but those who knew him will remember his contributions deeply.
Don was a dedicated volunteer with the Polk County Search and Rescue Unit of the Polk County Sheriff's Office, where he served for about 8 years. Joining the unit in 2016, Don diligently honed his skills as a Mantracker. He progressed from a novice to an Apprentice II certified tracker, regularly participating in and leading weekly training classes. As an excellent mentor, Don applied his tracking skills on several search missions for missing persons and evidence recovery during criminal investigations. He loved being out of doors whether on the water or traversing on an unmarked path through the woods.
Don will be deeply missed by his work family at Bridgeway Community Health and fondly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and service will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life.
