Donald “Don” S. Criel 81 of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois passed away Friday April 5, 2024. Don was born August 7, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Donald and Maureen Criel.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Catherine Criel (nee Kittle); sons Michael Criel and Jeffrey (Jennifer) Criel; grandchildren Michael (Samantha) Criel Jr., Brian Criel, Patrick Criel, Scott Criel and Sean Criel; great grandchildren; AvaGrace and Liam; brothers George Criel and Dennis Criel. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Maureen Criel, his daughter-in-law Nikki Criel and sister-in-law Patti Criel.
Don is a Veteran who honorably served his country for 3 years in the Army and was a member of Lake Zurich American Legion Post 964 for 35 years. He worked and retired from the City of Chicago after 30 years as a Hoisting Engineer and was a member of IUOE for 50 years. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved fishing on his favorite lake in northern Wisconsin that allowed him to do his well known Perch fish fries for his family and friends that came to their cabin in Crandon, Wisconsin. Don was very proud of saying he hunted and fished with four generations of Criels, starting with his grandfather, father, sons and grandsons. He would have loved to add his great grandson Liam to the list. Don was happy to say he had been to all 50 states and hunted or fished in Argentina, Hawaii and Africa. He visited Ireland to find his Grandma Bridget’s house in County Mayo. He had many stories to tell and his sons and grandson loved listening to them.
Visitation will be held Friday, April 19, 2024 from 1:30pm until the time of the Funeral Mass at 2:30 pm at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 33 South Buesching Road, Lake Zurich, Illinois
