WINSTON SALEM – Donald “Don” Ray Hackett, 84, went to his Heavenly home on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Don was born on April 12, 1940 in Roanoke, VA to Perry and Lillian Staton Hackett.
Don was strong in his faith and had a strong love for his family. He went to great efforts to make sure everyone knew they were loved and cared for. Everybody knew him as "Papa!" His house was always full and he always had room for one more! There were no limits on what he would do for anyone that needed help. Papa was a great man and exemplified what it means to love others first.
Don enjoyed playing golf, camping, sharing a good meal, and always made sure his family shared annual vacations.
He worked for Bahnson Company for over 30 years, serving as the President of their Labor Union and later joined Quality Oil, where he shared the same work ethic until retirement. Don also served as the Scout Master of Troop 930 at Crews United Methodist Church for many years.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Lee Hackett; his son, Johnny Hackett; four siblings, Perry Hackett, Jr., Betty Carter, Wayne Hackett and Gerald Hackett.
Surviving are his daughter, Tammy Everhart (husband, Wayne); four grandchildren, Robbie Mabe (wife, Jessica), Candace Mabe, Shawn Hackett (wife, Katie), and Ryan Hackett; seven great grandchildren, Brenna, Camden, Haley, Maverick, Kassidy, Karrigan, and Leighton; one brother, Red Hackett; a sister-in-law, Brenda Hackett; and many nieces and nephews
