Donald "Scott" Duncan of Wesley Chapel, NC passed away surrounded by family on the morning of Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at the age of 62.
Born in Columbia, SC on April 7, 1962 to Donald Bruce Duncan and Wilma Lane Traylor Duncan, Scott graduated from West Florence High School in 1980 and attended Francis Marion College in Florence, SC. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Clifton Reid Duncan.
He is survived by his wife Nancy McCoy Duncan of 36 years; son Dallas "Carter" Duncan, daughter-in-law Mary, granddaughter Caroline, granddaughter due February 2025 of Waxhaw, NC; and brother Dr. Barry Duncan of Asheville, NC.
Scott was larger than life, with a personality that could change any frown to a smile. He woke in the morning, bright eyed and rarin' to go. He loved life, and his sense of humor could make anyone belly laugh! He was loyal to his family and dear friends-doing anything and everything to help in times of need. Scott's son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter were his Pride and Joy. Each year he prepared an elaborate surprise Christmas project for them, which he spent months planning and building from scratch. A true patriot, lover of history, and self-taught engineer, Scott was well-versed in vintage automobiles, airplanes, and "American mechanical artistry," as he termed it. He loved the mountains, having lived in Colorado as a young man and enjoyed many peaceful days in North Carolina's Blue Ridge.
He had a deep appreciation for music, especially the talented musicians of the 1970s. He never grew tired of listening to his favorites and discovering beautiful new pieces. Music was a profoundly social activity for Scott, and he loved turning up the volume to highlight poetic lyrics, funky rhythms, and virtuosic performances.
Scott spent 32 years as a Rural Mail Carrier, and took great pride in his work-serving his customers with an unmatched zest and energy. They were so grateful for his many years of service. Upon his retirement in April 2019, he received countless notes of appreciation for his level of care and professionalism. He was loved by his colleagues, who fondly remember his funny nicknames, sayings, gags, and incredibly positive attitude.
As a young man, he was a member of the Monroe Jaycees, serving as President during his tenure. He was known for his inventive costumes and ideas for the Jaycees' annual haunted house fundraiser.
His temperament and humor remained an essential part of his personality during his three year journey with melanoma. He never missed an opportunity to make a caregiver laugh, and faced his treatment with gratitude and bravery.
A Memorial Service in Scott's honor will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Holland Funeral Service in Monroe, NC, with visitation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Scott's memory to the Melanoma Research Alliance at curemelanoma.org/tribute (730 15th Street NW, Fourth Floor, Washington, DC 20005).

Scott was a barrel of laughs to be around. He had a great sense of humor and would you crack a smile if you were ever down. At work he was one of the fastest and most professional mail carriers in the building! If my memory serves me correctly, he never had an accident in his 32 years of service. I remember him in a very happy way. I still have one of the patches he gave out when he retired. You did a wonderful job here on earth Scott. Sleep in heavenly peace ok.
