Donald Dyer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farewell Funeral Service - Palm Bluffs on Mar. 26, 2026.
In loving memory of Donald Ray Dyer, affectionately known as Don, Duck and Donnie, who peacefully departed this world on March 17, 2026, at the age of 87.

Born on October 29, 1938, in El Dorado, Arkansas, Don was a beacon of strength, love, and wisdom to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life, a testament to dedication and compassion, leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and community.

Don was the cherished son of Robert Monroe and Effie Mae Dyer and grew up alongside his siblings, Bobby, Jamie, Maxine, and Betty, all of whom predeceased him. Don lost his father at a very young age and relied on his older siblings for guidance.

His early years were spent in Fresno, where he attended local schools and was active in sports.

Due to financial hardship, Don dropped out of high school his sophomore year and worked full time to support himself. He later went to night school and graduated with his high school diploma.

Don's commitment to public service was evident from a young age. Before embarking on a distinguished career in law enforcement, Don served his country in the United States Army Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge in 1962.

His professional journey was as diverse as it was impactful. Don worked in construction alongside his brothers and father-in-law, before transitioning to a career as a truck driver.

However, it was in law enforcement that Don truly found his calling, dedicating over three decades to the Fowler Police Department, Madera County Sheriff's Department, and Fresno Police Department. As president of the Madera County Sheriff's Association and a mentor to countless officers at each department, Don's legacy of integrity and mentorship will be long remembered. Both of his children and granddaughter chose to follow in Don's footsteps and became Fresno Police Officers.

In 1956, Don married the love of his life, Anna Lea Rackley, marking the beginning of a beautiful 70-year journey together. The two of them first met in southeast Fresno when Don was one of the first customers at a cafe owned by Anna's parents. Don volunteered to work at the cafe so he could spend time with Anna. Their union was blessed with two children, Diana and Jerry, who brought immense joy and pride to Don's life.

Don moved the family to the country, just outside the small town of Fowler, in 1964. He was a
devoted father, teaching his children a strong work ethic and sharing his love of sports with them. Together, they spent cherished moments riding horses, motorcycles and attending games of the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, and Fresno Giants.

Don's passion for sports extended beyond spectating. He was an umpire for Fowler Little League Baseball for many years and a coach/player for several men's softball teams, some of which Jerry played on. Don even coached a few women's softball teams which Anna and Diana played on. In later years, Don continued to play and pitch on various fast pitch softball teams, sharing his skills and enthusiasm with others.

Don served as a Fowler Cub Scouts leader and helped Anna with the Fowler 4H Club. Don always enjoyed having his children participate in the Fowler Fall Festival by either riding their horses or in one of his decorated cars.

Don's role as a grandfather and great-grandfather was one he held dear. Don was a steadfast presence at his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events, cheering them on with unparalleled pride and joy. His legacy is carried forward by his four grandchildren, Dawnielle (Jason), Damon, Jeremy (Alysse), and Janelle (Cory), and his seven great-grandchildren, Danika, Jacob, Aiden, Sawyer, Declan, Trinity, and Charlotte.

Don was a man of many interests, but he had a particular fondness for animals, having cared for numerous horses, dogs, cats, and chickens throughout his lifetime.

Those who knew Don will remember his "gift of gab," his strong handshake, and his knack for striking up conversations with strangers. His candid nature and willingness to share his thoughts, whether welcomed or not, endeared him to many.
Don will also be remembered as quite the prankster.

A service to celebrate Don's remarkable life will be held on April 1, 2026.

A brief semiprivate Graveside service will take place at 9 AM at the Fowler cemetery located at 8523 S. Fowler Ave. for those who wish to attend.

A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 10:30 AM at the Worship Center in Fowler located at 2830 E. Manning Ave.

Family, friends, and community members are invited to gather in remembrance of a man whose life was a testament to service and hard work.

As we bid farewell to Don, we carry forward his legacy and unwavering dedication to family and community.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Don by making donations to the Animal Compassion Team.
