Donald Ehling Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Arlington Memorial Gardens Funeral Home & Crematory on Dec. 7, 2023.
In Loving Memory of Donald Adam Ehling
Donald Adam Ehling, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 6, 2023, at the age of 87. Born on November 25, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Don lived a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories.
Don, a dedicated family man, is survived by his loving wife, Carole Ehling, with whom he shared a beautiful journey of 66 years. Their love story began during their high school days when Don served in the Navy Reserve. He proposed to Carole on her graduation day and left for the Air Force the very next day. Despite the distance, their love endured, and after almost a year of letter writing, they were finally able to tie the knot during Don's leave. Their marriage was a testament to the strength of their bond and the power of commitment.
An adventurous spirit, Don found solace in the mountains and spent many of his early adult years stationed in Monterey, California, where he indulged in his passion for exploring the ocean and seeking out starfish. Over the years, he and Carole traveled extensively throughout California, visiting picturesque spots and national parks. Their love for nature also led them to embark on annual vacations across the United States, creating cherished memories with friends and family along the way.
Don was not only a man of adventure but also a skilled carpenter. He honed his craft under the guidance of his Uncle Frank and eventually became an incredible carpenter himself, helping to build three beautiful homes for his family. Known for his handyman abilities, Don had a knack for fixing anything that came his way, earning him the admiration and respect of all who knew him.
Beyond his hobbies and career, Don's true joy came from spending time with his family. He boasted a strong bond with his children, Deborah (Steve Deger) Ehling and Cynthia (Joe) Fields, Jennifer Ehling (deceased), Gary Ehling (deceased) and was a proud grandfather to Melissa (Michael) Sundbye, Lauren (Bryan) Parks, Logan Binder, Ryan (Jacki) Lohmann, Heather (Robby) Hetzer, Henry Ehling, Charlotte Ehling, and Nathaniel Ehling. Additionally, he held dear his daughter-in-law, Amy Ehling, and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Hailey, Hunter, Harper, Eliza, Graci, Lyric, Gavin, Garrett, and Carly. Don's unwavering support and attendance at his grandchildren's sporting and musical events brought immense joy to their lives.
Don had an avid love for outdoor activities, including golf and archery bow hunting for white-tailed deer. He enjoyed peaceful moments by the water, indulging in his cherished pastime of fishing. One of the highlights of his family gatherings was the annual pumpkin roll on Thanksgiving, ushering in laughter and delight for children and adults alike.
Deeply appreciative of art and culture, Don had a special passion for Indian art and artifacts. He was particularly fond of the artwork by Bev Doolittle, which adorned his home, serving as a reflection of his appreciation for the beauty and depth of Indigenous culture.
On December 12, 2023, we will gather to remember and celebrate the life of Donald Adam Ehling. The visitation will be held from 11:45 am – 12:45 pm at the Arlington Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 2155 Compton Road, 45231 (follow the blue line upon entering the memorial park). A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm at Arlington Memorial Gardens, in the Garden of Roses.
Don's departure leaves an indelible void in our hearts, but his legacy of love, adventure, and resilience will be carried on by those he leaves behind. As we come together to celebrate his life, let us remember the joy he brought into our lives and the lasting impact he made on each one of us.
May the soul Don find eternal peace, and may his memory be a blessing to us all.

He was my cousin. When I was about 10, he gave me his Chemistry set. I was just thrilled .... He also told me around this time to Brush my hair 75 times a day to prevent baldness ! I went hunting once in my life at about 12. It was with Don. A really great man. Wonderful husband, father etc. someone to emulate.
