Donald "Don" Russell Graves, Sr. was born on March 10, 1935, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and transitioned peacefully on August 26, 2025, at Methodist Hospital.

Don met the love of his life, Mary Jane (Collier) Graves, at a young age. He was from what is affectionately known as Des Moines' west side, and she hailed from the east side. Although they attended rival high schools - Don at Tech High and Mary Jane at East High - their love transcended boundaries and endured for 68 years. Both graduated in 1953, after which Don earned his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and later his master's in education administration from Drake University.

A gifted athlete, Don excelled in track and field throughout high school and college. His passion for sports and leadership naturally led him into coaching and education, where he dedicated his life to shaping young people's futures. He broke barriers early in his career by becoming Iowa's first Black high school coach of a girls' basketball team in Randall, Iowa - an opportunity that would pave the way for countless others to follow.

Don's remarkable 41-year career in education and coaching culminated at East High School, where he served as Track and Cross-Country Coach, Attendance Director, and Counselor. His dedication and impact earned him numerous accolades, including induction into the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 2022. As one reporter from KCCI Channel 8 observed, "the quaint northside home feels more like a museum," filled with memories and awards honoring a life of purpose and passion.

To celebrate his memory, Don leaves behind his devoted wife, Mary Jane; two children, Donald "Donnie" Russell Graves II and Donna Marie (Kevin) Burkett; three grandchildren, Kenda Johnay Marie Graves, Natasha Nate' (Oakley) Jones, and Donald "D-Man" Russell Graves III; two great-grandsons, Rishon and Raylen Jones; and a beloved bonus granddaughter, Stephanie Burkett. He is also survived by his brothers, Phillip and Leonard Graves, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will continue to honor his legacy.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Morton Graves, mother, Arlene Graves, and brother, Morton Graves, Jr.
