I was fortunate to have Captain Don Griffis as my company commander in Vietnam, 1968-1969. But also had the privilege to meet up with him long after the war and became friends with him. For ten years we talked and met at reunions with a small group of Marines that served with him. My favorite memory of Cap as I called him as a civilian,,was every time we met that welcoming smile of his made you know he was proud to be among us again. I could talk to him about anything. He was a Brother to us all, formed in combat, a bond that stays forever. Those of us left behind miss him dearly. Onward Cap. Guard the gates till we get there. See you soon. Cpl. Gary V. Hoerauf, USMC 1966-1969

A group of Marines that served under Captain Griffis In a combat unit in Vietnam were coming to Texas in January 2023 to visit with him. We. were very sad to hear our leader was gone. He was a good Commander, a good Marine and later a good friend. We will miss you Cap.

Don was a man well known and of great purpose. He was full of life and laughter. His service to the community is unmatchable. He was late for a soccer game one day. When Prissy was asked about his whereabouts her reply was "He´s late everywhere he goes." But not so true. Don never stopped at staying busy. I was at a wedding for Carly Allen, Sam´s daughter, that I noticed Don´s failing health. He was the first one out and I was right behind him. Helping him through the door and down the steps was so disturbing to see him the way. A man of conditioning loosing ground. But a proud person he was even at managing the attendance. Nothing was ever to hold him back. A great person never to be forgotten.
