Donald R. Harrier O.D.
July 3, 1932 - March 24, 2025
Donald Ray Harrier "Doc" was born near Ingalls, KS on July 3, 1932 to John and Martha (Imel) Harrier. He grew up in Cimarron, KS graduating in 1950. Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served in the Security Command reaching the rank of staff sergeant during the Korean War. While home on leave, he married the love of his life, Rose Schauf, on February 17, 1953 at St. Stanislaus Church in Ingalls, KS. He was one day late checking in at his next assignment, but he made a promise in first grade and kept it. They celebrated 62 years together.
With the support of the GI Bill, Donald graduated from Dodge City College in 1956 and was accepted into the Pacific University School of Optometry where he graduated in 1960. After graduation, he began practicing Optometry in Dodge City where he served in various civic organizations including the Jaycees, and was appointed as a Junior Chamber International Senator, The American Legion, Kiwanis and others.
In June of 1965, he moved his family to Oberlin where he, alongside of Rose, practiced Optometry until his retirement in 1998. During his 38 years of practice, he was a member of the Kansas Optometric Association and traveled to South America with Volunteer Optometric Services to humanity. While in Oberlin, he continued public service by serving on the City Council, Gun Club, County Club, Rotary, he was a 64 year member of the Knights of Columbus, served as member of the Joint Council on Recreation under then Governor Docking and was Past Commander of the Oberlin American Legion as well as the Dodge City American Legion Post.
After retirement, he and Rose spent many winters in Brownsville, TX. He enjoyed time with his family and friends, at the beach, playing cards, camping, hunting, fishing, golfing and trap shooting. He was proud to have won the Midwestern Grand American ATA Clay Target Championship in 1979.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 62 years, Rose. He is survived by his son Donald (Julie) Harrier of Buckeye, AZ., his daughter Cindy (Griff) Lincoln of Oberlin, his sisters Donna (Martin) Rowland, Dodge City, KS, and Judy (Glenn) Oyler of Cimarron, KS. In addition he is survived by 4 grandchildren, Travis (Heidi) Lincoln, Tanner (Kari) Lincoln, Dustin (Cassie) Harrier and Dr. Kallie (Nick Harnish) Harrier. He is survived by 8 great-grandchildren, one great, great grandchild and many loving extended family and friends like family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Oberlin, KS at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in Oberlin Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made out to Donald Harrier Sr. Memorial Fund. Condolence can be left at www.plumergobber.com.
