Donald Lee "Don" Mattern, 88, of Wellsville, OH, passed away on October 14, 2024 at UPMC-Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Don was born on April 11, 1936, the son of the late John W and Mary A (Higgins) Mattern. He attended East Liverpool High School and resided in the area his entire life.
Don served his nation with honor as a proud United States Marine from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1956, with distinguished service in Japan and Korea. Following his military service, he built a respected career as a machinist at Mackintosh-Hemphill in Midland, where he worked diligently until his retirement.
A man committed to civic duty, Don was an active member of the American Legion Post #70. He further demonstrated his leadership and advocacy skills through his roles as Past Union President of Local 1269 and as a Democratic Committee Member, where he strove to make a positive impact in his community. Along with his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers: John, Ralph, and Jay; and his sisters: Louise, Dorothy, and Betty.
His memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 64 years, Karen (Glover) Mattern, who stood by his side since their wedding on February 13, 1960. Together they raised a devoted family, including his children: Donald Lee (Cyndy) Mattern of Hermitage, PA, Robert Scott Mattern of East Liverpool, Roberta "Bobbie" Mattern (Marc) Holt, Edward Allen (Denitra) Mattern of East Liverpool, and Brian Charles (Marian) Mattern of Austintown. He also leaves behind his siblings, Jim and Virginia.
He was a beloved grandfather to Allison, Malia, Tyler, Bobbie, Jacob, Katie, Seth, Ross, Spencer, Isaac, Dylan, Bella, Lily, and Nova, and a great-grandfather to Dominique, Karlee, Ryan, Ava, and Ella. He is also survived by his close friends and in-laws, Robert "Bo" Rouzzo and Dolores "Dee" Mattern, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as the cat he secretly loved, Blacky
