Donald Alfonse Matthys, 90, of Westville, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2024.
He was born October16, 1934 in North Liberty, Indiana to Achiel and Suzanna (Van Overberghe) Matthys.
On September 12, 1959 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Otis, he married Bernadine Potrzebowski who passed away on August 21, 2008.
Donald is survived by his children Mark (Diane) Matthys of Valparaiso, Paul (Christina) Matthys of Plainfield, Indiana, Mary Lynn (Bruce) Cluskey of Lombard, Illinois, Timothy (Jennifer) Matthys, Christopher (Bobbie) Matthys, both of Westville, Daniel (Stacey) Matthys of Mill Creek, Indiana, Donald also had 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving him are his brothers and sisters Cecilia McKenzie of Minnesota, Joan (Jake) Jacobson of Michigan, James (Rita) Matthys of Westville, Robert (Sandy) Matthys of Westville, Theresa (Ron) Biggs of Valparaiso, Jeanette (Clarence) Plisky of Ohio and Henry Matthys of Valparaiso.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded also in death by his son Andrew Matthys, his parents. And his sister Mary Jane Hegedus.
Donald was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah and the Knights of Columbus Council 12671. Don was the most Senior member of the council. He became a Knight in 1956. He was a farmer. Previously, he worked for Westville Oil/Cam Or and later retired from Quality Oil in Valparaiso. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.
Visitation will be 4-8 PM on Tuesday at the Newhard Funeral Home, 58 W. Walnut St. in Westville.
A funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 4th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Valparaiso.
