DEFIANCE - Donald R. "Don" Overmeyer, 94, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Glenn Park of Defiance.
He was born in March, 1929, to the late Leo and Agnes (Stump) Overmeyer in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Don was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in 1951 with B.S. degree in science. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War for four years.
On February 7, 1953, he married Theresa (Hartman) Overmeyer and she survives. They moved to Defiance in 1962 and joined St. Mary Catholic Church and Don was a scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts for seven years. Don was a member of K of C Council 1039 and Defiance Elks Lodge 147. He worked at Campbell's Soup Company for over 30 years until his retirement in 1992.
Don was extremely proud of his sons and their accomplishments. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Don and Terri were married for 70 years and were blessed with six sons who survive, Dr. Richard (Kathy ) Overmeyer of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Gary (Barbara ) Overmeyer of Powell, Ohio, Dr. Thomas (Lori ) Overmeyer of Winter Park, Florida, Dr. Daniel (Hope) Overmeyer of Sylvania, Ohio, Dr. James (Sarah ) Overmeyer of Orlando, Florida, and Joseph (Lori ) Overmeyer of Canton, Michigan. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Lauren (Paul), Leigh Ann, Jessica, Andrew, Sarah, Katie, Jimmy and Danny, great-granddaughter Madeline, six step-grandchildren, Cherie, Josh, Julie, Kylee, Kelli and Johnny, seven step-great-grandchildren, Hunter, Riley, Hagen, Emmy, Asher, Ella and Duke. Also surviving is his sister, Joan DiTroia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Overmeyer.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 4-7 p.m. at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance, with a Rosary Service at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Dave Cirata officiating. One additional hour of visitation will be held at the church before the Mass. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Post 3360.
