Donald Gary Pate, known warmly to all as Gary, lived a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys that matter most. At 69, he passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama-the city he and his beloved wife Betty had called home since the early 1980s. Born on October 26, 1956, to the late Virgil "Doodle" Pate Jr. and Ann Gilliland Pate, Gary grew up with a foundation of family values that would shape everything he did. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, a milestone that launched a remarkable career. In the early 1980s, he and Betty made the move to Huntsville, planting roots that grew deep and strong over more than four decades. Gary's professional life was one of dedication and expertise. For over forty years, he poured his talents into engineering, specializing in the critical work of testing and systems evaluation that supported the aerospace, defense, and telecommunications industries-fields that demand precision, integrity, and a steady hand. He concluded his career as a senior engineer at Radiance Technologies, retiring with the quiet satisfaction of knowing he had contributed meaningfully to advancements far beyond what most people ever see. But it was in his roles as husband, father, and PawPaw where Gary truly shone brightest. To Betty, he was the steadfast partner who built a home filled with love and laughter. To his children, he was the guiding presence who taught by example-patience, kindness, and hard work. And to his grandchildren, he was simply PawPaw: the one whose eyes lit up at their arrival, whose stories made them giggle, and whose hugs felt like the safest place in the world. Gary found pure happiness in the company of those he loved-spending unhurried time with family and friends, sharing meals, swapping tales, and creating memories that will endure. He cherished his fishing trips with his brothers and cousins, those peaceful days on the water where conversations flowed easily and the world felt right. In his workshop, woodworking became a labor of love; with careful hands and a patient heart, he crafted pieces that carried his warmth and skill, gifts that will remind his family of him for generations. A faithful member of Rivertree Church-Downtown in Huntsville, Gary lived his beliefs every day-through acts of service, quiet support for others, and a gentle spirit that drew people close. Though we grieve his absence, we celebrate a life beautifully lived: one marked by loyalty, craftsmanship, family devotion, and the kind of understated goodness that leaves the world better. Gary's legacy lives on in the love he gave so freely, the lessons he shared without fanfare, and the joy he brought to every room he entered.
