Donald Pope Obituary

Published by Porter Loring Mortuary North on Jul. 23, 2016.
Donald Ray Pope, Jr., age 62, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, July 23, 2016, after a courageous five-year battle with multiple myeloma. Donny was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 18, 1953 to Donald and Aurora Pope. He was the first of five children. Donny graduated from Thomas Edison High School in San Antonio, Texas in 1971, where he played saxophone in the marching band. Donny spent his career working with and around cars, which he loved. He worked for many years at Cavender Oldsmobile, Toyota and finally Rush Truck Center/Peterbilt, where he made many friends. His friendly, warm personality made him easy to be admired and loved by everyone he met. Donny will be remembered for his gentle strength, his kind heart and his ability to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. He found happiness in music, trains, his two dogs, woodcrafting and building, traveling to Tennessee, and spending time with his family. Donny was the handyman "MacGyver" of the family; not only was he willing to help anyone in need, he always knew exactly how to solve any problem. He is preceded in death by his parents Donald Ray Pope, Sr. and Aurora Gilland Pope, and his sister Barbara Pope Krause. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Shirley Barthelme-Pope, his brother John Pope, his sisters, Katherine Pope and Patricia Black and husband Jerry. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him like a father. Donny showed determination, strength, and courage throughout his battle with cancer. Donny's family and friends give thanks to Dr. Sharon Wilks and her nurses and staff at Texas Oncology for their wonderful care. A visitation will be held at Porter Loring North on Sunday, July 31, 2016, from 5:00-7:00 pm. A service to celebrate Donny's life will be held at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10:00 am. Donations may be made to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Alamo City Cancer Council, or a charity of your choice.

Don and I went to school together, we were in the marching band together, I played drums. Also lost our band director Tavis McCown this year and another drummer Randy Reinhard. Don is a great guy and a good friend, we had lots of fun in the band and he will be greatly missed. God bless you, Don, Raul

I just learned this morning of Don's passing, from your good friend, N.J. I know you must still be reeling. I feel for you. He was such a pleasant, engaging man. The last time I saw him, I put my hand out to shake his, and he just leaned in and gave me a wonderful hug. I know you will miss your handsome man, for the rest of your days. You called him Donny always. I refer to him as Don, only because that is how he introduced himself to some folks he did not know. Either way; certainly a terrific guy. I hope the support of family and friends will give you some sense of comfort. Tears are cleansing...

Kathy, Patty and John,
I was so very sorry to hear that Donny passed away. I remember your mom letting me hold him when he was only four months and I only twelve years old. I was also saddened to hear that Barbara had also passed away. I had no idea. She babysat for my Marcy and Matthew more than forty years ago.
My sister Mary coincidentally passed away too last Saturday morning in Philadelphia. She loved your mother and had fond memories of her and Blanche playing together as kids.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
Your second cousin,
Magda Gilland Chellet (formerly McChesney)

I'm so saddened to hear of Donny's passing! We grew up just a few blocks apart and would sometimes walk to school together. We had many classes together and laughed and shared silly stories all the time, then recalled those same silly stories when we'd run into each other. I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers and may you all find strength and comfort in the days to come.
