Don’s life began on January 12, 1950, in Russell, Kansas, born to Edgar S. Rice and Lorene H. (Daniels) Rice, the second of three sons. He passed away at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, on March 10, 2026, after a short illness. Don graduated from El Dorado High School in 1968, earned his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University. He served a lengthy career with Cessna, Boeing Aircraft and Spirit Aerospace in IT and security having retired in 2014.
After his retirement, he remained regularly active and continued his strong sense of purpose with volunteer work at Meals on Wheels and the West Side United Methodist Church in Wichita where he and Marsha were long time members. He remained fit with his newfound passion for playing pickleball several times a week with old and new friends, right up to the week prior to his death. He especially loved coaching softball for both Tirzah’s team and Amy’s team, then later supporting his grandchildren’s teams.
Don is preceded in death by his parents first by his father, Edgar then by his mother, Lorene. He is survived by his wife, Marsha, of the home, two daughters, Tirzah (Bob) Hadley, of Wichita, Kansas, and Amy (Daniel) Deisch of Wellsville, Kansas; three granddaughters, Rory Hadley, Samantha Hadley, and Annika Deisch; four grandsons Ewan Hadley, Junius Deisch, Wilder Deisch and Finn Deisch; older brother, Dennis (Julie) Rice of Winfield, Kansas, and younger brother Delbert (Amey) Rice of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at West Side United Methodist Church (1313 W. Lydia Street, Wichita, KS) at one o’clock in the afternoon.
