Donald John Sack
June 25, 1926 - September 9, 2025
Donald John Sack passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025, at the age of 99, in his home, with his grandson and great-grandson by his side.
Don was born on June 25, 1926, to Albert and Loretta (Altenbach) Sack in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Racine and graduated from Horlick High School in 1944. Shortly after graduation, Don voluntarily raised his right hand and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a P-51 Mustang crew chief during WWII in U.S.-occupied Japan, where he achieved the rank of Corporal.
His military honors include:
· Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon
· Victory Medal
· Army of Occupation Medal – Japan
· Good Conduct Medal
After his overseas service, Don returned to Racine, married Margaret Kachichian, and embarked on a career as a self-taught engineer. He worked for Racine companies such as J.I. Case, Walker Manufacturing, Oster, and Hamilton Beach. Don enjoyed many stories of working in factories with the ladies who played on the Racine Belles baseball team. Baseball, especially the Milwaukee Brewers, was one of his passions.
Don was also an award-winning pigeon racer. He loved growing tomatoes at his home-starting plants from seeds saved from previous harvests-and delighted in sharing his bounty with friends and family.
In addition to his busy career, Don was employed at Modine as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, traveling extensively across the U.S., Europe, and South America. He and Margaret built a life together, raising two children, Donald Michael and Judith Christine. During his children's early years, Don served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and an active member of the Racine Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps.
He retired in 1991 and traveled in his RV throughout the southern U.S. with his second wife, Sharon. Don and Sharon enjoyed making birdhouses, fishing, and gardening together.
Don was preceded in death by his wives, Margaret and Sharon; his son, Donald and daughter-in-law Michelle; three dogs named Anoush; and Sharon's sons, Scott and Andy; along with many in-laws. He leaves behind his daughter Judith (Jay Sweers), seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A lifelong patron of the Sausage Kitchen and a regular at The Dynasty Restaurant, Don was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and Sacred Heart Church.
Funeral services will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers and donations, the family kindly requests that you donate to an animal rescue organization of your choice, as Don was a friend to all animals.
We Love You Gramps!
