Donald Scherer Obituary

BOWLING GREEN -- Dr. Donald W. Scherer "Servant in the Pursuit of a Wise Prosperity"

Donald William Scherer, 83 of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. He was born June 22, 1940, to the late William and Althea (Moseley) Scherer in Detroit, Michigan. He married Charlotte (Erpelding) on August 27, 1960, and she survives in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Donald Scherer was an Emeritus Professor of the Philosophy Department at BGSU (PhD studied at Cornell). He helped develop the Environmental Ethics component of study for the department. As an environmental ethicist, Donald's passion was to protect and sustain natural entities and resources. He loved discussion, and was always on to the next project related to the ethics of energy use and sustainability. He was an author, activist, peacemaker, teacher, and mentor. He has many professionally published articles and several environmentally oriented books. He was on the Board and past President of Green Energy Ohio, and was involved in Bowling Green Kiwanis club and Habitat for Humanity. He was an Elder of First Christian Church in Bowling Green, and was active in building the church community. Being born in Detroit, Donald was a Detroit Tigers, Lions, Redwings, and Pistons fan. He had a love for music and played the cello and piano. Above all, Donald cherished spending time with his family and showed up for his family and community. He was often found in deep conversation with a family member, a student, or a colleague; not infrequently, at Grounds for Thought Coffee. He always had a smile, a hug, and wisdom to share. He will be missed dearly.

Don Scherer was a Husband, Father, Grandparent, Great-Grandparent and friend to many. Along with his loving wife of 63 years, Char, Don is survived by his children Karen (Mike) Krueger of Bowling Green, Ohio, Mark (Nadja) of Passau, Germany, sister Carole (Jim) Enwright of Warren, Michigan; 11 grandchildren, Becca (Dan), Amanda (Aliya), Ben, Gabe (Tiffany), Mary (Aly), Sam, Barbara, Cosmo, Lily (Jessica), Jackson, Logan and 5 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Abby, Sammy, Eli, and Harbor.

Don is preceded in death by his parents.

I remember Don fondly. We worked together creating his video support for "Logic 101" many years ago and we've run into each other a few times since. During our time together we saw many faces of each other and I believe, grew closer from that exchange. He will always live in me.
