Donald Sumners Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scott Funeral Home from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, 2025.
James "Jeep" Taylor, Jr., age 78, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in DeLand, Florida, to the late James P. Taylor, Sr. and Louise Taylor, Jeep lived a life marked by laughter, service, and love.
A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Jeep honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. His years in the service shaped his sense of discipline, duty, and loyalty, qualities he carried throughout every chapter of his life.
Fate intervened more than 46 years ago when Jeep met the love of his life, Elizabeth, in one of life's most charming twists of destiny, when she accidentally watered her balcony plants and, in turn, Jeep himself, standing one story below. That unexpected shower bloomed into a lifelong love story, one filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. Together they built a wonderful life, rich with memories and friendship.
Jeep dedicated many years of hard work as a machinist, maintenance and third shift supervisor for Reynolds Metal at Plant 3, where his craftsmanship and precision were unmatched. He was a board member for the Rale Credit & Teacher's Credit Unions and, for years, was lovingly known as the Stihl Man at Rural King. Jeep served his community and beyond as a volunteer in many aspects. He ran the carousel for the Louisville River Bats, bringing more smiles to those around him. But his true passion came to life in the lights and laughter of the Jeffersonville High School Drama Department. As a devoted volunteer, Jeep poured his heart into helping aspiring thespians and set designers bring their visions to life. Known affectionately by the students as "Papa Taylor," he was the man behind the curtain-steady, creative, and endlessly encouraging. His legacy will live on in every set built and every young performer he inspired. He served as Technical Director from 1999. He was the technical director of River Stage from it's opening show and every show following, up to Footloose; JCC for The Color Purple; and Dads with Tools at Derby Dinner Playhouse. He was also the first to step up to be the volunteer maintenance man at Southeast Christian Church Indiana Campus.
Jeep's fun-loving spirit was contagious. With a quick wit and a warm grin, he could make anyone feel at ease. Whether he was fishing for crappie, shrimping off the Florida coast, or pampering his beloved dogs, Inky & Jae. Jeep lived life to the fullest and made sure everyone around him did, too. He was a husband, friend, mentor, and storyteller who left laughter echoing in every room he entered.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Purser) Taylor; children, Jeanne Taylor, JP Taylor (Amanda), and Allison Taylor; grandchildren, Elliott Taylor and Quinn Harper; and brother, Stephen Taylor (Terry); niece, Lauren Condon (Gerald); great-nephews, Oliver & Wolf. The family extends special thanks to the First Floor of Hillcrest Village Rehab, as well as Southern Care Hospice (Kalen, Brehanna, Eden, and Chaplain Leland) for their loving care.
The family has honored his wish for cremation. Memorial Services will be held at 7PM on Friday, December 12, 2025 at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway). Friends may visit from 3PM until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Jeffersonville High School Marching Band or the WHAS Crusade for Children.
Jeep Taylor's story was one of love, loyalty, and joy… a reminder that even the smallest moments (like a little balcony rain) can lead to the greatest adventures.
