Donald J. Vander Weele, age 80 of Bear Lake, died early Saturday morning August 24, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family and his faithful canine companion, Apollo.
He was born on April 1, 1944, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of the late Donald & Gertrude (Beeke) Vander Weele. He was a graduate of Portage High School. He was employed as a Master Optician by American Optical and later as a financial planner (CFP) for IDS.
Don was a former member of the Manistee United Methodist Church and a member of the Classic Car Club. He enjoyed playing softball for many years with his son Ross, attending his grandchildren's high school sporting events, and his model train hobby. He also loved his Norwegian Elk Hounds and the Indianapolis Colts.
Survivors include his daughter Lynn (Bret) Mathieu and grandchildren Jennica (Matt) Preuss and Haley Mathieu; daughter-in-law Karen Vander Weele and grandchildren Nolan, Ryan, & Erin Vander Weele, Megan (Guy) Gonyon III, and great-grandson Guy IV; two brothers Dennis (Christine) Vander Weele and Mark (Kim) Vander Weele; nieces & nephews; and the mother of his children Paula Fortin.
He was also preceded in death by his son Ross Vander Weele and brother and sister-in-law Larry and Patty Vander Weele.
Per Don's wishes no services are being held.
Memorials in Don's name may be directed to the Manistee Council on Aging (Senior Center).
