Donald George Wieland, father, grandfather and business owner, passed away on Sept. 17, 2023, at the age of 83. He was born on a farm near Lidderdale, Iowa, on April 19, 1940, to Arthur and Gertrude (Vonnahme) Wieland. He attended Lidderdale Country School until 8th grade and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1958. Don served in the Army National Guard in Audubon, Iowa, and was honorably discharged.
On June 27, 1964, Don married Janice Sporrer, from Dedham, Iowa. To this union with Jan, they had three children: Brian Wieland of Phoenix, Ariz., Kari (Greg) Stanislaw of Kirkland, Wash., and Trish (Chad) Wieland-Lingenfelter of Port Orange, Fla.
Don and Jan owned and operated Templeton Building & Home Center for many years. During this time, Don served many years as a member of the Templeton Volunteer Fire Department and on the Templeton City Council. The couple divorced in 2006 and he moved to Carroll.
Don's joy for life was evident in his interests and sociability. He loved to fish and hunt, especially deer and pheasant. A favorite adventure was his annual Alaskan trip, catching large halibut and coming home with "fish" stories for years to come, and ice fishing in his clam hut. More than once, when out to dinner with his family, his entrée became cold because Don was still at the salad bar talking to friends and business associates. He enjoyed woodworking, politics and euchre, along with Western movies and music of the '40s and '50s.
Don is survived by his three children and seven grandchildren: Tom Ziegmann and his wife, Tabitha, Nathan and Katie Wieland, Justin and Jacob Stanislaw and Carston Lingenfelter. He is also survived by his brother, Kenneth "Shorty" Wieland and sister-in-law, Frances, of Templeton, and many cousins in the Carroll area.
Don is proceeded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gertrude (Vonnahme) Wieland, a twin sister who was stillborn, and his daughter-in-law, Linda (Gustaveson) Wieland.
