Dong Jin Yoo of Twinsburg, Ohio passed away at home on August 17, 2024 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean Oak Yoo, and his daughters HeaRyung (David) Naragon of Stow, Ohio and Heawon Yoo of New York, New York.
Born in 1936 in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea, Dong Jin was one of six siblings. The Yoo family, along with their country, endured incredible hardships under Japanese occupation, and later the Korean War. After South Korea's independence in 1945, Dong Jin's father, Sung Gap Yoo, was an instrumental contributor to its constitution as a congressman under first president Syngman Rhee.
With the country struggling to rebuild in the decades that followed the Korean War, Dong Jin decided to immigrate to the U.S. with his wife and two small daughters at the age of 41. Without knowing the language and having minimal connections, Dong Jin was still able to establish himself as a small businessman, first in Bedford, followed by dry cleaners in Aurora and Chagrin Falls. He successfully grew these businesses until retirement in 2006, after which he enjoyed the majority of his remaining years traveling the world (Istanbul being his favorite), playing golf and socializing with friends.
Dong Jin was devoted to his family, taking pride in the smallest of his daughters' accomplishments. He charmed friends, family, and strangers alike with his kind face, easy smile, and gently demeanor.
By his own admission, Dong Jin "lived a long, happy life." He will be greatly missed.
