Mrs. Donna Marie Burkey

Donna Marie Burkey (79) of Acworth, GA, went home to rest in the arms of her Lord and Savior on October 4, 2023. She passed away peacefully after a long illness, surrounded by family, at The Heritage Hospice House in Marietta.
Left on this earth to cherish her sweet memories are her husband of 61 years David Burkey; sons Dennis Burkey (daughter-in-law Stephanie) of New York, NY and Donald Burkey of White, GA; grandchildren George, Arabella and Ava of New York, NY; brother Danny Shaw (sister-in-law Jackie) of Salisbury, NC and many nieces and nephews.
Donna was preceded in death by her father Richard Shaw and mother Doris Burden Shaw of Anderson, SC; sisters Margaret S. Kuhn, Patti S. Walsh, Sandra S. Hager, and Melinda S. Tavenner; brothers Sonny Shaw and Richard Shaw Jr.
Donna was born in Marietta, GA in 1943. She spent her early years in Anderson, SC, where the Shaw and Burden families had deep roots. She spent her adolescent years in Washington DC where she met David while she was a student at Burdick Vocational High School.
Before having children, Donna was an administrative assistant at the investment firm Ferris, Baker, Watts in Washington, DC. Donna and David raised their two sons in Silver Spring, MD. She affectionately named the family "The 4 D's".
Donna loved the Lord and served Him in many capacities throughout her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, caregiver, and friend to many.
Along with being a loving wife and mother, Donna also cared deeply about people in her extended family, her church, and her community. She was a leader of a Senior Bible Study Group at Berwyn Baptist Church in College Park, MD. She was a devoted companion and caregiver to her parents and in-laws in their later years. She loved entertaining and sharing time with her siblings, nieces, and nephews. Her house was always active and full during family gatherings.
After David's retirement in the early 1990s, Donna's southern roots drew them to Acworth, GA to be closer to her family in Anderson, SC. David and Donna spent their Golden Years as active members of their church and their RV Club where they enjoyed socializing with friends and travelling.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Donna Marie Burkey will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023 at 3PM at Benson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alexander Sharpe and Rev. Bill Rorie officiating. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Acworth, Georgia.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9, 2023 from 2pm until 3pm at Benson Funeral Home.
