Donnie Eugene Obie was born November 7, 1964, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the Union of John T. Obie and Joann A. Obie. Proceeded him in death are his paternal grandparents, John T. Obie Sr., Mary Obie; maternal grandparents, James U. Berry, Velma Berry; father, John T. Obie Jr., cousin, Virgil Patterson Jr. and best friend, ArLester Scott.
Donnie accepted Christ at an early age at the Wayside Community Church. He was an member at New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor A.M. Howard until his passing.
Donnie was educated in the Kansas City MO public school system from elementary school to junior high and he was a graduate of Southwest High School class of 1983. During his high school years, Donnie participated in R.O.T.C., was a guard for the basketball team and a running back for the football team. Upon his graduation from high school, he attended Southwest Missouri State. There he played football as a running back.
Donnie loved his family. He was known as the family photographer, the grill master of burning the food at the family cookouts, the godfather of running all his female cousin's boyfriends away and a jokester. Donnie was a lover of people. He enjoyed socializing, making people smile, sharing an encouraging word even during his sickness.
Donnie always found a reason to flash a smile, often mistaken for Gearld Levert or Mike Tyson, he would cause people to do a double take. Once in Las Vegas, someone thought he was Mike Tyson and asked for an autograph.
Donnie enjoyed sports. He coached football and baseball for South Suburban and RBI. Donnie had his own football and baseball team. He not only coached kids in the community, but he also coached his sons and nephews. Donnie was employed at General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Tyson's Food until his health began to fail.
Donnie leaves to cherish his mother, Joann A. Obie, siblings, Antoinette Obie (Mavrick), Daryl Obie (Billie), his sons Donnie Obie Jr., Dontae' Obie, grandchildren, Sa'myah Obie, Donnae Obie, Graceson Obie, Kyngston Obie, Deaonna Obie; great granddaughter, Novalii Obie; special son/nephews Richard Byrd, Rashad Obie, Rodney Byrd, and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, special aunts and uncle Pearl Patterson, Shirley Stevenson, James Berry, Denise Obie, special cousins, relatives and friends.
Donnie will truly be missed, but we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We will forever hold you in our hearts. We love you, Donnie!
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, 11am at Rising Star MBC. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 9am-11am at the church. Services conducted by Lawrence A. Jones & Sons Funeral Chapel. Condolences may be shared on our website.

May God continue to bless the family of Donnie. I met Donnie in high school and he was a cool dude. Always friendly and smiling. I´m sorry to hear he passed away and I wasn´t able to make his home going celebration but it is with a sincere heart that I send my sincere condolences to his family.

I just saw Daryl and he told me his brother passed,so I thought about it for awhile then it came to me Don - I knew Don from back in the day at the clubs and Daryl from hooping and the clubs - it's been awhile since I saw Don but they are both good Brothers - Take Your Rest in Peace.
