Donnie Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 17, 2025.
Donnie Sylvester Weaver, born December 16, 1945, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025.

Raised in the West Mount community of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Donnie's passion for music began at a young age. By the age of 13, he had joined the band The Kays as their lead singer and keyboardist. As the group's popularity grew, they evolved into The O'Kaysions - best known for their 1968 gold record hit, "Girl Watcher," with Donnie as the unmistakable lead voice that helped define an era. His soulful and heartfelt vocals left an enduring mark on fans and fellow musicians alike.

A proud graduate of North Carolina State University, Donnie began his professional life as a math teacher in Rocky Mount before moving to Raleigh to pursue a career as a computer analyst and programmer. His analytical mind and creative spirit balanced perfectly - allowing him to continue his lifelong love of music while building a successful career in technology.

Throughout his life, Donnie continued to write music and lyrics, penning more than 50 songs. His songwriting legacy extended across decades, with one of his compositions featured in the 1979 television series "Whatever Happened to the Class of '65" and another in the recent Hulu series "Pam & Tommy."

Donnie's memory will forever live on in those who loved him.

He is survived by his daughter, Ginger Weaver Robles and her husband Luis Robles; grandson Logan Robles; granddaughter Rachel Robles; niece Sheri McCall and her husband Phillip McCall; nephew Larry Weaver Jr., as well as many other great-nieces and nephews, several cousins and many long time friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Truman Weaver, mother Hettie Bell Weaver, brother Larry Weaver Sr.,his wife Margaret Weaver and 2 nephews Tony Weaver and Randy Weaver.

Services to celebrate Donnie's life will be announced at a later date. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared love, prayers, and memories.
