Visitation for relatives and friends will be from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 1 at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services on Monday at the church.
Doreen was born April 22, 1934 in Vernon County, WI to Gervase and Josie (Calhoun) Wilson. She was raised in
La Farge, WI and graduated from La Farge High School. She attended school in St. Louis, MO to become a medical technician and worked as a medical technician in Mauston and Wisconsin Rapids. She married John Cook on April 2, 1955 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mauston. They were blessed with 68 years of marriage and five children.
Doreen and John lived in
Kenosha, WI the first few years of their marriage before moving to Wisconsin Rapids. After the children were born, Doreen focused her attention on raising them and was a wonderful mother. She later returned to the workforce, working at Del Monte for a few years and retired from Ore Ida after 16 years of service with the company.
Doreen was a longtime member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Kellner. She was a woman of many talents and interests and led a fulfilling and diverse life. Doreen was a passionate gardener, an avid bird-watcher, and a skilled painter and seamstress, her hands as capable of creating beautiful garments as they were of making a garden bloom. She was also an adventurous spirit who loved camping and snowmobiling and having horses and riding them with her daughters. Doreen's passion for life was as diverse as a wildflower meadow, each interest and hobby adding a unique hue to her vibrant persona. But of all the roles Doreen played, none was more important to her than her role as a devoted wife and family woman. She spent many winters in Myrtle Beach with her husband and friends. Her family was her world, and she cultivated it with the same love and dedication she brought to her garden.
Doreen is survived by her loving husband John; five children: Dan (Jody) Cook of Wisconsin Rapids, Sandra (Ronald) Aufdermauer of Stevens Point, Lori (Roy) Outcelt of
Wasilla, Alaska, Bonnie Hansen of Wisconsin Rapids, and Paula (Mark) Karamitis of
Claremore, Oklahoma; six granddaughters: Catherine (Lew) Porter, Ashley (Josh) LaBarge, Amanda Cook, and Sarah, Laura, and Lisa Karamitis; five grandsons: Dustan Cook, Craig Hansen, Tyler (Jena) Hansen, Ethan (Jennifer) Outcelt; and Shane Karamitis; six great-grandchildren: Owen Porter, Kenley Cook, Liam and Lydia Hansen, Zane LaBarge, and Dylan Outcelt; sister, Judy (Tom) Moessner of North Carolina; and brother, James (Velda) Wilson of
La Farge, Wisconsin. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Stanley and Ronald; sisters, Gladys and Alice; and an infant brother, Kenneth.
