Doreen was an inspiration and while I was only her coordinator for half the year, it was a privilege to be in her presence. She was a pillar of the community and easily one of the most influential women I´ve ever worked for. When she told me she marched with Martin Luther King Jr. I was floored. She was a powerhouse and she changed the lives of all she met. Dear Doreen will be truly missed.

I was saddened to learn of Doreen`s death, particularly since I had not been in touch with her in recent years. Yes, that is guilt that you hear.
I learned so much from Doreen as I sat on the board the First Place School. She showed that a nonprofit organization could be designed a different way - one that included a flattened structure. She included staff in board meetings and listened to what they had to say. People could volunteer at the school, but not until they had toured the facility and learned what the school was on a mission to do. The school´s fundraisers downtown were occasions to behold, with the children greeting attendees. I did my best not to miss any! I was honored when she asked me to facilitate some staff development at First Place.
She also taught me fundraising when she and I co-chaired fundraising events for the African-American Kenyan Women´s interconnect. She and I also co-chaired a fundraiser to raise money to build a child care center in Ethiopia so that young mothers could stay in school.
I miss you, Doreen. You were beacon of light while you were here and the world is a better place because you came this way. Rest in peace and power

Dr Cato was a woman you could not help to appreciate and love. I worked with her for many years when she served on King County CEHKC ten year plan to end homelessness. Her dedication to education and belief that 'everyone should have a home' are legacies she has left for all of us. Rest in Peace beautiful lady

Doreen will be missed. She was excellent as a director and leader. We vacationed together several times in Cancun, Mexico with our friend Dawn Mason. Doreen loved to swim and be in the water. Those were joyous times leaving work behind to enjoy the moment. Dian Ferguson

My eldest grandchild - (then)Marcelas Owens is the young 11 year old in the historical photos of Pres Obama signing his healthcare bill into law March 2010. Dr. Doreen Cato was an integral influence in the growth of Marcelas and also his 2 younger sisters.

I worked with Doreen Cato at First Place school for seven years. My best memory is of assisting her when she taught an Alvin Ailey dance to students. She was graceful and she brought out grace and strength in those young people. I'm sure, wherever they all are, that they remember it too. Sending love to all who loved her and worked with her! Dance on Doreen.

Doreen loved children ,dance and adventure. She would plan whole school field trips with special lunches for all the students, teachers and parents...Trips to Kenya with a group of African American Women enhanced her knowledge about World Wide Poverty. She taught my class a superb Dance to raise money for children and families in transition. Both of her children are very talented like their very talented Mom.May Doreen Rest in Peace. My heart is broken learning this news. Doreen was a good friend and she was a woman who I could count on to share the challenges we faced in our work. She was a fierce advocate for racial justice and equity. She did not suffer fools. She always encouraged me in difficult times at United Way of King County and as one of the facilitators of Project LEAD. She was simply a beautiful and generous person.
May her family and friends find comfort in her memory and many stories of a life well lived.

I am so sorry to learn of Doreen´s death. I worked with her at First Place and traveled with her throughout the country during those years. She was an incredible woman with so much vitality, such a great sense of humor, and so much care for others. Even though I hadn´t seen her for years, I thought of her often. I´m grateful for her presence in my life.

I am heartbroken! Doreen Cato was a mentor of mine when I started at United Way of King County - in fact SHE was the true founder of Project LEAD - 3 years before I went through the program, and continued to teach in the program after she left United Way. She was truly an inspiration, one of the only people of color in a director position at United Way at the time and for quite a while. When she left it was to lead First Place School focused on education for children experiencing homelessness. She was also involved in Leadership Tomorrow , leadership programs at Bastyr, and so much more. So many benefited from her commitment to building leadership in others, and I'm honored to be among them. Rest in peace and power Ms. Doreen
