Doris Elaine Barton

Doris Elaine Barton, 90, of Heineburg Rd, Burlington, VT passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the University of Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

She was born on February 24, 1935 in Shoreham, VT, the daughter of the late James F. Kemp and Ethel Naylor Kemp. After various moves around the state, in 1954 she wed the late Walter P. Barton, Sr. of Winooski, VT, where they would continue to live and raise four wonderful boys while lifelong members of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. The early years were spent working at their Winooski restaurant, the Chez-nous, then helping out at Walt's Game Room over the years, but her first loves would always be that of a wife and raising their four boys. Attending track meets and many baseball, football, and basketball games were the norm. Later, she could be seen attending her grandsons' basketball games for many more years. She will always be remembered for her unwavering love of her boys and their families, and with it, an incredible desire and willingness to attend most anyone's event, party, or celebration--even with short notice.

Doris is survived by her children: Walter P, Jr and his wife, Stacey, of Essex Junction, VT, David and his wife, Kris, of Williston, VT, John and his wife, Jocelyn, of Ferrisburgh, VT, and Stephen and his wife, Mary, of Colchester, VT; 13 grandchildren and their spouses; 20 great grandchildren; her sister, Betty Bunch, of Oklahoma; sisters-in law Freda Jones of St. Albans, Mary Ann Barton of St. Albans, Elaine Barton of South Burlington, Sandra Barton of TN; and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, Sr., in 1994, her brother, Ralph "Sonny" Kemp in 1977, and her sister, Alice Deuell in 2023.

A wake will be held at LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St, Winooski, on Tuesday, December 16, from 5-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 17, at 11:00am at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 1251 North Avenue, Burlington, VT. A private burial will be held in the spring.
