Doris Gordon Brown, formerly of Reidsville, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned from her earthly home on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the remarkable age of 97. Surrounded by the love of her devoted son and niece, she departed this life after nearly a century of purposeful living, leaving behind a legacy of faith, education, and unwavering dedication to children. Born on May 8, 1928, in
Gastonia, North Carolina, to the late Bench and Sadie Gordon, Doris grew up with a deep love for the Lord and a passion for learning that would shape her entire life. During her formative years, she followed the teachings of Pastor Taylor where her spiritual foundation was firmly established. She continued her spiritual growth and her devotion to Jesus Christ through her faithful membership with the Elm Grove Baptist Church, St. Paul Methodist Church in Reidsville, Cathedral of His Glory in Greensboro, NC and the First Baptist Church Piney Grove in Lauderdale Lakes, FL.
After graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in Reidsville in 1948, Doris pursued her calling in education, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem State Teachers College in 1952. Her commitment to educational excellence led her to continue her studies, obtaining a Master's Degree in Education from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro in 1963. Doris dedicated four decades of her life to shaping young minds, beginning her distinguished teaching career in Hawkinsville, Georgia, before returning to North Carolina to serve the school systems of Rockingham and Caswell Counties. With specialized training in Early Childhood Development and Learning Disabilities, she touched countless lives, ensuring that every child received the attention and care they needed to succeed. Her impact on education extended well beyond the classroom walls. Upon retiring after 40 years of dedicated service, Doris relocated to Florida, but her passion for teaching never waned. She continued to nurture young minds as a tutor, often welcoming students into her home to master the fundamentals of reading and spelling. Her dedication to literacy and learning remained steadfast until her final days.
A woman of deep faith and remarkable artistic talent, Doris beautifully combined her love for her Lord Jesus with her creative gifts. She became a published children's author, crafting poetic storybooks about biblical characters of Ruth, Lazarus, and Job – to name a few. Her artistic abilities extended to illustrating these cherished books,' bringing scripture to life for young readers through both word and image. As an accomplished singer and musician, her beautiful voice could often be heard lifting spiritual hymns while her skilled fingers moved across the keys of the piano or organ, creating melodies that glorified her Savior and brought joy to all who listened. The testimony of Doris's life was reflective of the sacred hymns that filled the atmosphere wherever she would be found-What a Friend We Have in Jesus, How Great Thou Art, Where We'll Never Grow Old, and Yes, God Is Real.
Doris was preceded in death by her three beloved sisters-Bernice Scales, Annie Pearl Gordon, and Frances Roberts. These beautiful souls are now reunited in Heaven, surely rejoicing, singing and dancing together in the presence of the Lord. As the spiritual leader of her family, Doris leaves behind a profound legacy of faith, love, and service. She is survived by her devoted son, Maurice Brown of Fort Pierce, Florida, and her cherished niece, Reshetta Roberts of Spring Hill, Tennessee, both of whom were blessed to be by her side during her final moments. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, former students, and all who were touched by her gentle spirit and generous heart.
