Doris Jean Critchelow, age 89 of McDaniels, KY passed away May 22, 2025, at Breckinridge Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born in Hardinsburg, KY on September 20, 1935, daughter of the late Mary Lillian Brown and James Flood Potts.
Her faith was a very important factor in her life. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and attended St. Romuald Catholic Church, where she volunteered her time in any way to help with church and school activities. She was a huge sports fan, especially basketball, and she followed her family to games regardless of the place being played. She was always their biggest cheerleader. Doris Jean was an Avon consultant for many years, but her passion was being a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She led such a full, happy life and was devoted to her family. She was a very strong woman in so many ways. She was a mother to 11 children, a grandmother to 38 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly. Unfortunately, she saw much sadness as well, each time handling the situation with strength, grace and making her faith stronger. Her husband died unexpectantly at a young age, leaving her with seven young children to raise on her own. She experienced the loss of three children, three grandchildren, one great grandchild and two siblings. Her doors were always open for family and friends to visit and you could be assured of a wonderful meal with delicious desserts, especially chocolate and coconut pies. Her cinnamon rolls were to die for. Doris Jean raised a very large garden and enjoyed canning and freezing vegetables for the winter. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many clothes for her children. She loved music and could be found cleaning her home singing along with Marty Stewart and Waylon Jennings.
She enjoyed traveling to new places, but put many miles on her car driving to ball games, delivering Avon and attending church services in Breckinridge County. Doris Jean had the biggest heart and gave the best hugs. She never met a stranger and always made you feel as if she had known you forever. Doris Jean will leave a legacy of love for her large family and the many people who were fortunate enough to call her their friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Hobart Critchelow; three children Jerry, Tony and Patsy Critchelow; three grandchildren Brad Critchelow, Michelle Moorman and Wesley Weatherholt; one great grandson David Wayne Brumfield and her siblings Jimmy Potts and Sue Ann Hale.
She is survived by 8 children: Terry Moorman (Doug) of McQuady, KY; Kevin Critchelow (Javonda) of Gallatin, TN; Annette Lucas (David) of Big Spring, KY; Theresa Weatherholt (Tommy) of Cloverport, KY; Sandy Carter (Lamar) of McDaniels, KY; Brenda Bradshaw (Jeff) of Prospect, KY; Raymond Critchelow (Missy) and Patrick Critchelow (Kari) of Hardinsburg, KY.
2 daughters-in-law: Gail Critchelow of Hartford, KY and Stephanie Shalosky of Cloverport, KY.
35 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren
1 sister: Mary Agnes Brown of Clarkson, KY
Many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Funeral services will be held at St. Romuald Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 11 AM with burial in the St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday, 3 – 8 PM and Tuesday after 8:30 AM. All times are central.
Expressions of sympathy are suggested to St. Romuald School.
