Doris Marie Doner, age 87, of Sutter Creek, California, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Born in Modesto, California, on August 6, 1938, Doris lived a life filled with joy, kindness, and deep devotion to her family and her faith.
She was married to her devoted husband, Harvey Doner, for 57 years and was the caring mother of Tom Garber (Carrie) and the late Tim Garber (Laura). Doris was deeply cherished by her grandchildren Chris Perales (Raven), Ashley Garber (Dulce), and Michela Garber. She is survived by her brother Merle Howser (Joan) and many beloved nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Pearl Howser, her brother Don Howser (Mary), and her late husband Lowell Garber.
Doris spent many years of her life raising her boys, first in Moscow, Idaho, then Modesto, and later Lafayette, California, where she and Harvey built a warm and welcoming home filled with happiness, creativity, and community. For more than 20 years, Doris worked in administration at the University of California, where she was known for her dedication, warmth, and steady professionalism.
Doris had an adventurous spirit and a heart that saw beauty in the world God created. In addition to traveling extensively, she lived abroad at various times in Paris, the United Kingdom, and Germany-each for nearly a year-embracing local life and culture wherever she went. Whether sipping coffee at a Paris café, strolling London's neighborhoods, or exploring small German towns, Doris delighted in becoming "a local," finding friendship and connection wherever she landed.
She also had a lifelong passion for the coast. The sound of the ocean and the rhythm of the waves reminded her of God's peace and presence. Doris cherished seaside escapes with Harvey, peaceful walks along the shore with family, and the calming beauty of the ocean-where she felt close to God's creation.
Doris was incredibly creative, expressing herself through her love of fabric arts. Her quilts and handcrafted pieces reflected not only her eye for color and design but also her spirit of generosity. Each creation was an act of care-made with patience, gratitude, and a joyful heart.
At home, Doris was happiest when surrounded by family-sharing meals, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying each other's company. She loved sewing, cooking, planning her next trip, and watching the hummingbirds at her feeder. She found joy in simple moments and lived with quiet faith, compassion, and grace. Those who knew her were touched by her gentle spirit and steadfast devotion.
Though Doris has left this earthly home, her light continues to shine in the hearts of those who cherished her. We take comfort knowing she is now at peace and reunited with loved ones who went before her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honor Doris's remarkable journey and the warmth she shared with so many.
