Celebrating the Life of Doris Radford Harris
A Legacy of Love and Kindness: Remembering Doris Radford Harris
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Doris Harris. For over four years, Doris brought her warmth and charm to The Villa at Suffield Meadows. She passed peacefully on March 4th after bravely enduring dementia, a challenge she faced with dignity and grace up until her last breath.
Doris's love knew no bounds as a devoted mother to Col. James E. Harris, III (Ret.) (Jill) of Charlotte, NC, and Kay Harris McClure (Joe) of Marshall, VA. She cherished her family and always made sure we knew how deeply she cared. Her beloved husband of 43 years, Lt. Col. (Ret.) James E. Harris, Jr., was her partner in life's adventures-from cross-continental assignments to a joyful retirement by the ocean in Florida. Doris was not just an officer's wife; she was the heart of our home, offering encouragement and laughter through every chapter of their journey together. Doris' home was always the gathering place for many festivities and parties with friends and family. Doris was known as "The Hostess with the Mostest".
Born and raised in
Bennettsville, South Carolina, Doris was the daughter of Sam J. Radford and Annie Cope Radford. Her siblings, Tilman Radford and Elizabeth Radford Thompson predeceased her.
Doris brought joy and sparkle to the office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, where her "chop stick lady" hairstyle became legendary among her colleagues. She later thrived as a purchasing agent at Patrick Air Force Base, FL, supporting operations at Kennedy Space Center-often marveling at the launches and proud to play a role in history. She relished making friends wherever she went, always radiant with her charming personality.
In 1990, Doris fulfilled a lifelong dream by writing and publishing The Woman's War, sharing her experiences and "personal war" as the wife of a military officer at home with two children while her husband was away at war serving his country (3 separate tours in Vietnam). Doris cherished every opportunity to meet readers at book signings and speaking engagements; always humble and grateful that her words touched others; especially other military wives.
As "Grandma," Doris left a legacy of love for all her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was especially proud of her grandchildren: Lt. Col. James E. Harris, IV (Ret.) (Christina), Rachel Harris Brooks (Ben), Lindsay Kate McClure-Briggs (Adam), and Joseph M. McClure, Jr. (Kaylee). She delighted in their accomplishments and supported their dreams, always relishing any opportunity to spend quality time with them.
Her great-grandchildren-Kailee Brooke Harris, Ethan James Harris and Addyson Grace Harris, Scarlett Rae McClure, Jackson Reed McClure and Cody Reese McClure, Boone Wesley Brooks, and River Harris Brooks; also great-grandchild USAF SGT Jacob Cade Brown (Casey) and great-great grandchild Jackson Wyatt Brown, each held a special place in her heart with their own individual personalities.
Doris's circle of love extended to her sisters-in-law, Donna Harris Harkins and Nancy Kate Harris McCann, as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom treasured her for her kindness, warmth and charm.
We will forever remember Doris for her radiant smile, loving heart, and unmistakable flair for fashion-brightening every room she entered and every life she touched.
Our family is deeply grateful to the staff at The Villa at Suffield Meadows for their compassionate care, and to Karen and our private caregivers who became like family, providing Doris with comfort, laughter, and companionship throughout these past years.
Doris will eventually rest alongside her beloved husband, Jim, at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC-a fitting tribute to a long life well-lived, united forever with the love of her life. The date for this honorable service is yet to be determined.
We invite all whose lives were touched by Doris to join us for a Celebration of Life at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Avenue,
Warrenton, VA on Saturday, March 21st at 2:00 p.m. The time of visitation will begin at 1:00. Following the service, please join us for a small reception at The Moser House, where we will share memories, laughter, and tears in her honor.
