Doris Hewitt Obituary

Published by Legacy on Apr. 21, 2023.
Doris Marie Hewitt was born February 25, 1951, to the union of Emma Mae Ratliff Hewitt and Arthur "Bill" Hewitt, Jr. in New Orleans, LA. To this union, she was the oldest of four. She was called to eternal rest on Good Friday, April 7, 2023. She passed away peacefully with her children, her sister, and a cousin close by.
She was baptized at an early age at Greater Liberty Baptist Church by the Late Rev. Noah Copelin. As a youth, she served as a Junior Deaconess under the leadership of the late Sis. Emma Mitchell. She also sang in Choir #3 as well.
She later returned to Greater Liberty as an adult. She served in many compacities: an usher, a trustee, Church Treasurer, Church Secretary and "Twelve Tribe" captain for the tribe of Simeon. She was also the First Director of the "Touched By a Tutor" Ministry.
However, her favorite role at the church was being asked to serve as the director of the Seasoned Saints ministry. It encouraged her to accept being a Seasoned Saint herself. She worked tirelessly to make sure that the Seasoned saints were engaged and involved.
Doris Marie met and married Charlie Parker, Sr. and to this union, two children were born: Charlie Parker, Jr. and Brandon Parker
Doris Marie loved education. She graduated early with the class of 1967 from McDonogh 35 Senior High School. She then went on to Xavier University and Southeastern Louisiana University. Straight out of college she started teaching at Xavier Preparatory High school. She taught at Prep for 20 years. She also taught at George Washington Carver, Fannie C. Williams and ending her career at Priestley School.
Even though she worked hard she enjoyed life even more. She threw some of the best parties and was also the life of the party. Her favorite time of the year was Mardi Gras. On Mardi Gras Day, her children knew if they were not up and ready to go at 4am, they would be left. She was also a former member of the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ronald Hewitt and Daniel Magee.
Left to cherish her fond memories are her two sons, Charlie (Taja) Parker Jr., Detroit, MI. and Brandon Parker, New Orleans, LA. Three Grandchildren Bryce Anthony, Braylon Leander, and Charlie Schrae Parker, Detroit, MI. A brother Julius (Karen) Hewitt Sr. Tylertown, MS. A sister Dora Hewitt, New Orleans, LA. Six nephews Daniel "Bo" Magee, Jr., Jackson, MS Jamal Hewitt, Metairie, LA. Julius "Byrd" Hewitt, Jr. Harvey, LA., Andy and Antonio Magee Tylertown, MS. Two nieces Keisha Hewitt Austin, TX and Quiana Hewitt Houston, TX. Three God Children Darrell Bell, Jamal Hewitt, and Olivia Parker. Also, many cousins and friends.
Relatives and friends of the family are all invited to attend her Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, April 22, 2023, 11:00AM, at Greater Liberty Baptist Church, 1230 Desire St, NOLA. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM until the hour of service. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery and Mausoleum, New Orleans, LA.

My sincere condolences to the family. Doris was a kind and caring person. She was dedicated and concerned teacher and friend. Spent many moments talking to her even after I graduated. Blessed to have reconnected with her over the past few years.
