"The time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
2 Timothy 4:6-7
Mrs. Doris Lee Taylor-James entered into her eternal rest January 9, 2026, after a lengthy illness surrounded by her loving family. Doris was born January 21, 1938, in Mershon GA to the late Arabell Thompson King & Robert Lee King, Sr. She is preceded in death by both her parents, stepfather Mitchell Maxwell, great grandson Jaymerson T. Goodman and great great grandson Chase Alexander Goodman.
She married her first love, Robert Tommie Taylor and to that union were born four children; Elizabeth of Waycross GA, Maria (Steven) Portsmouth VA, Toni (Carlton) Albany GA and Robert (Kena) Phoenix AZ. Though their marriage ended, they remained devoted parents, sharing a lasting friendship. Robert preceded her in death. Doris has one godson Darren Long. Three sisters and one brother; Eloise Maxwell, Sandra Hill and Elaine Maxwell all of Waycross and Robert Lee King (Diane) of Jacksonville FL. She was the proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren; Yolanda, Donnie, Shuwan, Kenefra, Anechia, Carlton, Kirsten, ReNeasha, D'Shawn, Robert and Brandon and great-grandmother to 15 great grands as well as 8 great great grandchildren. And a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Special cousins; James Wheeler Jones and Romie Thompson.
Later in life, Doris found love again, marrying Marion C. James, and together they built a life rooted in love, companionship, and shared devotion. Marion preceded Doris in death.
Doris received her early education in
Mershon, Georgia, and later attended Center High School in Waycross. She attended Waycross Technical School and graduated in January 1970 as an LPN. Driven to further her education, she later earned her Registered Nursing degree from South Georgia College, graduating in February 1980. She was a devoted registered nurse whose life's work was rooted in compassion, strength, and service. As a Black registered nurse, she carried her calling with pride. She walked with quiet strength, deep faith, and a heart full of compassion, offering comfort, reassurance, and prayer to those in her care. Nursing was not just her profession-it was her ministry. Her patients felt safe in her presence, her colleagues respected her leadership, and her community benefited from her generosity of spirit. Though she has entered eternal rest, her legacy of faith, healing, and love will continue to live on in all whose lives she touched. Doris lovingly encouraged many young women to pursue nursing and higher education, always uplifting others with her kind words, steady support, and genuine belief in their potential."
Doris loved the Lord with all her heart and devoted her life to prayer and praise. As a young woman, she was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church and later joined St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained an active and dedicated member until her illness prevented her attendance. Doris found great joy in singing in the choir, serving as a Deaconess, and supporting her church family in countless ways. She was well known for preparing her famous chicken and rice and her beloved pound cakes for church functions, gifts she shared generously as an expression of her love and service.
Above all else, Doris loved her children fiercely and without measure. She poured her whole heart into her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, giving each of them all of herself and all of her love. Never for a moment did her family doubt the love of their Mother; it was constant, comforting, and unconditional. Family was her greatest joy and the center of her world.
Doris also found joy in life's simple blessings. She was an avid reader, loved to travel, and delighted in singing, often filling rooms with warmth through both her voice and her spirit.
The family extends special thanks to Alethea Clark for her dedicated, compassionate, and loving care, which brought comfort to our beloved mother and provided invaluable support to our family. We are deeply grateful for her kindness and devotion as a caregiver.
Family and friends are being received at 909 Evans Way,
