Doris Jensen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Austin Funeral Home - Hallock on Jan. 26, 2026.
Doris Ann (Schumacher) Jensen, 92, of Grand Forks, North Dakota, fell asleep in Jesus on January 24, 2026.

Doris was born on December 18, 1933, near Drayton, North Dakota, to Melvin and Anna Schumacher. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Drayton High School. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church of Drayton, ND, which remained central throughout her life. Doris lived a life dedicated to service and demonstrated an unwavering devotion to faith, family, and community.

Doris and her family were deeply involved in Trinity Lutheran Church, where Doris faithfully served as an organist and Sunday school teacher. She also created and sewed numerous banners that hung in the church for decades. Her Saturday evenings were a revered time of preparation for her Sunday mornings in worship and service throughout her entire life.

Doris was united in marriage to Lauritz "Buddy" Jensen on December 26, 1952. Together, they farmed side by side, sharing the workload and responsibilities of running the family farming operation, while instilling in their two daughters a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for faith and family. Known for her exceptional cooking, Doris was generous in showing hospitality. In addition to her work on the farm and in the home, Doris was an active leader in the Teien Township 4-H, community musicals, and helped organize local softball gatherings for teens at the Teien school. She shared her skills generously, teaching others to sew and encouraging creativity and participation across generations. Doris was also active alongside Buddy in the Republican Party. Following Buddy's death in 2007, Doris moved from Teien Township, Minnesota, to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she enjoyed spending time with her siblings and the fellowship of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and participated in their Bible studies.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Rodney) Rathmann, and son-in-law, Bradley Sobolik; grandchildren, Robert (Abbie) Rathmann, Martin (Anna) Rathmann, Emily (Robert) Gunnarson, Jason (Jill) Sobolik, Cassandra (Bradley) Smith, and Anna (Jared) Woinarowicz; great-grandchildren, Gus, Kaia, and Elin Gunnarson; Roderick, Heidi, Rowan Pepper, and Jacobi Rathmann; August, Mary, and Gideon Rathmann; Lucas, Reed, and Donovan Sobolik; Kine, Isla, Veda, and Shea Smith; and Claire, Lydia, Bryson, Colton, and Evelyn Woinarowicz; sisters, Jean Peppard, Irene Anderson, Ruth Mattson, Marlys (Ray) Long; brother, Donald Schumacher; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Anna Schumacher; husband, Lauritz Jensen; daughter, Wendy Sobolik; grandson, Nicholas Rathmann; and numerous other family members who welcomed her home.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., also at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Doris will be remembered for her quiet strength, faithful service, creativity, strong leadership, and deep devotion to her family and church.

I remember being able to spend time with Doris when she visited Dawn in St. Louis. She also attended Juice Plus events with Dawn when possible. As a fellow church organist, I was inspired by her lifelong service as a church organist.

Our sincere condolences to the family.
Doris was the person to contact when we were exploring our family connections in Minnesota, and thanks to her we met lots of relatives. The nicest person we have met, always helpful and always ready to serve the best meal you could dream about. Rest in peace dear Doris.

I had the joy of meeting your mother on several occasions, Dawn, and her kindness always showed through. She was such an accomplished woman, and I know you will miss her dearly.
