Obituary published on Legacy.com by Scottsboro Funeral Home on Mar. 7, 2026.
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, Doris Elizabeth Anderson Jett, our 90-year-old family matriarch, received the most beautiful honor of her lifetime: her Guardian Angel wings.
Doris was born in
Baltimore, Maryland, in 1935. She was the oldest of three children and grew up loving reading and music. She taught herself to play her grandfather's accordion and earned a scholarship to study voice at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. There she trained to be an opera singer, but eventually gave up her musical career to become a devoted wife and mother to three children. Humble by nature, she loved the Dear Lord. She moved with her husband Ted to
Scottsboro, Alabama in 1968, and joined St Jude's Catholic Church. There she shared her beautiful voice by singing for the parish and leading the choir for decades. She may be most remembered for her annual solo of "O Holy Night" during Christmas Midnight Mass, and also her moving performances of "Ave Maria".
Doris was so very proud of her children and was involved in all of their activities, from their early childhood years into adulthood. She shared the sport of baton twirling with Beth and was there to sew uniforms and cheer her on through all of her years of competitions, performing as a high school majorette and then a UA Crimsonette. Their mutual love of baton continued with her granddaughter, Sarah, who has also become a talented baton twirler. Doris was a talented seamstress and supported Beth's career as a television news anchor, carefully making 50 suits Beth wore repeatedly on the air.
Doris was an eternal optimist, loved to be happy, and loved to bring happiness to others. She enjoyed decorating her home for every holiday and was fiercely patriotic. She was so very proud to support her son Tim in seeking an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. She loved to visit and watch the activities of her favorite Midshipman. She always had love and loyalty for her country and the sacrifices of the US Armed Forces.
Doris always had a canine companion in her life and was so very proud of her Samoyeds, Cody and Emme. She loved to watch her son Dan and his shelties compete in Agility, Obedience, Rally and Flyball trials, always keeping up with their scores and awards. Even more, she loved to share her breakfast with her grand-dogs and sneak tasty treats to them whenever she could. She was grateful to share a home with Dan for the last 14 years of her life, laughing, chatting, dog-sitting, and watching Alabama football games and news shows. She marveled at Dan's quiet successes working with NASA and projects associated with Space exploration.
Doris loved her appointments to visit with and have her hair styled by Michelle and Danny Pittman of Hair Art. She looked forward to catching up on current events and solving the problems of the world from their beauty shop chairs. And she always left feeling so refreshed and proud of how beautiful they made her look with their talents as hairdressers.
Finally, Doris had a deep and humble sense of gratitude for blessings and kindness extended to her. She made sure anyone who helped her in any way or gave her any gift knew how grateful she was for their thoughtfulness. Knowing that gratitude is the key to happiness, Doris strived to exemplify that every day of her life, including her final months at Madison Manor of
Madison, Alabama. She was so very grateful for the hard work, patience, and compassion of those who took care of her as she aged.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Doris Anderson of
Baltimore, Maryland, sister Betty Anderson Englestad, brother Charles Anderson, and her husband Theodore "Ted" Jett, to whom she was married for 52 years.
After a private memorial service at Scottsboro Funeral Home, Doris joined her husband Ted for eternity at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens on March 7th.
She leaves behind her children Daniel X. Jett of Harvest, Timothy R. Jett (Laura) of Trussville, and Elizabeth A. Jett Gentry (Jim) of Harvest; and five precious grandchildren Lauren Elizabeth Jett, Anna Louise Jett, Timothy Richard Jett, Jr, Penelope Leigh Jett, and Sarah Elizabeth Gentry.
In lieu of flowers, and in accordance with Doris' love of companion animals, the family asks anyone who may feel lead to make a donation to Safe Haven Animal Shelter in her honor:
