Doris Jones Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory - Owensboro on Feb. 11, 2026.
Doris Shown Jones, 93, a lifelong resident of Owensboro, went to be with our Lord on February 10, 2026. She began her life's journey on October 31, 1932 as the youngest child of Frank and Mamie Shown. She was born in the house her father built at 936 Moreland Avenue and was welcomed by four sisters, one brother, five half-sisters and one half-brother, who have all preceded her in passing. At the age of 16, Doris married the love of her life, Jack D. Jones.

Caring for her husband and family were the focus of her younger years. She supplemented the family income by babysitting and assisting Jack in several of his business ventures, including management of Ellis Speedway and Jack's Wrecker Service.

Doris joined First Baptist Church and was baptized in 1940. Later, she held membership at Crabtree Avenue Baptist Church, Temple Baptist Church and Good Shepherd Church. She was a member of Walnut Memorial Baptist Church the last 25 years of her earthly life. She was blessed to be a worship leader with her autoharp of a local women's prayer group for 40+ years where she led many young women to experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

In addition to assisting her husband, she stayed busy with sewing projects such as designing and sewing draperies for church, designing and making outfits for the Owensboro Ski Club as well as making clothes for her family. Camping, boating, watching UK games, eating out and playing cards have been favorite pastimes through the years. Each holiday season she looked forward to making her special snack mix for all the family

In addition to her parents and siblings, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Jasper "Jack" Jones, and a daughter-in-law, Danna Jones.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Jones Collier (Steve) and Susan Jones Whittaker (Tom); two sons, Jack D. Jones and Randall L. Jones (Regina), all of Owensboro; 10 grandchildren and their spouses; two step-grandchildren and their spouses; 19 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The children are especially thankful for the devoted care she gave their dad who went to be with the Lord in October 2017 after almost 68 years of marriage.

God bless the many relatives and friends who visited, called, sent mail, shared food, played cards, mowed the grass, moved the toter and assisted her with ambulation.

We are proud of our mother for the Christian example she set for each of us with her faithfulness to the Lord for 86 years.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026 at Walnut Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Receiving of friends will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the church.

Memorial gifts may be sent to Walnut Memorial Baptist Church Music Program, 519 W. Byers Avenue, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Yesterday

Dear Donna, Susan, Randy, and Jack,
We have such fond memories of Doris and the hours of card playing with she and Jack plus brother Bill and Moma. Both brothers hated to lose and knew every card each of us held. Mother will sure miss her and getting to play cards with her at Donna´s. Thanks for all you have done to care for your mother. We know this `earthly farewell´ is hard but through a life in Christ you will be with her again in heaven.
David and I are in CT and will not be able to be with you tomorrow in person but in spirit and love. We are praying for you all.
Our love and sympathy,
Trafta and David
