Doris Joan (Hefner) McNew, 89 of Harrisburg, passed away at 5:24 AM, Monday, October 7, 2024 at Harrisburg Medical Center.
Joan was born on September 9, 1935 in Herod, Illinois to the late Harold and Helen (Lambert) Hefner. On September 8, 1955 she married William "Bill" McNew, and he preceded her in death on August 19, 2015. She was an active member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church and participated in all of the activities around the church. Joan worked as the secretary of Student Affairs at Southeastern Illinois College for over 20 years. She enjoyed cooking, card making, and all kinds of crafts. But most of all Joan loved her kids and grandkids. She enjoyed going to all of their sporting events. Joan was a kind, giving, and considerate person, who made a lot of sacrifices for her family.
Joan is survived by her three children, Keith McNew and wife Debra of Bradenton, Florida; Brian McNew and wife Cindy of Waterloo, Illinois; and Sheri Mathis and husband Mark of Harrisburg, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Kim Bastin and husband Jimmy of Parrish, Florida; Katherine Reed and husband Dustin of Grass Lake, Michigan, Kendyl Nolting and husband Nick of Palmetto, Florida; Nicholas McNew and wife Amy of Waterloo, Illinois; Dylan McNew of Waterloo, Illinois; Bethany Kaohi and husband Kai of Noblesville, Indiana; and Blake Mathis and wife Bethany of Harrisburg, Illinois; ten great grandchildren, Jackson Reed, Stetson Reed, Shane McNew, Nichole McNew, Kela Kaohi, Hayden Kaohi, Leila Kaohi, Mahina Kaohi, Taylor Mathis, and Jackson Mathis; four siblings, Wayman Hefner of Harrisburg, Illinois, Myrna Jones of Harrisburg, Illinois; Leo Hefner and wife Sue of Waterloo, Illinois, and Cheryl Cantrell and husband Kenny of Fort Mill, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Sally Conover Booth of Belmont, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, and husband, Bill, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Zan Hefner; brother, Nick Hefner; sister-in-law, Sharon Hefner; sister-in-law, Brenda Hefner; and brother-in-law, Bryan Jones.
Funeral services for Doris Joan (Hefner) McNew will be held at 12 PM, Thursday, October 10, 2024 at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church in Harrisburg. Rev. Scott Johnson and Rev. Trent Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 12 PM, Thursday, October 10, 2024 at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McKinley Avenue Baptist Church Youth or to Hospice of Southern Illinois and envelopes will be available at the church.
